What do an early-19th century travelogue and a simple message of acknowledgement have in common? They make up one "neo-dajare" — a category of dad jokes and wordplay increasingly popular with Gen Z in Japan. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/life/2025/11/19/language/neo-dajare-puns-wordplay-gen-z/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #life #language #language #nihongo #genz #comedy

@Tutanota Don't worry. When we're all gone and AI is fighting for us against the #broligarchy, in their luxury bunkers; we'll have one last victory.
Hurrah!
UPDATE
NYTimes (behind a paywall) is reporting that as of 6PM, 1.85 MILLION PEOPLE have casted a vote in these #2025elections. Al Jazeera (in an unplayable tiktokish video) says +2MILLION are projected to vote by the 9PM deadline.
that’s almost 25% of the total population of #nyc. not of total elegible voters. 2 MILLION is 22.5% of the estimated 8,804,190 souls living in The City.
this is a MASSIVE turning point for this city and this country.

@hiphopheaven I'm cool with #Loops being another great thing on the #Fediverse, but i'm just being honest about how this place often is so far from reality.
#Linux users thinking everyone is going to switch to linux... classic example. 26 year linux user here and i'll admit 34 years of it existing it's still single digit marketshare. That is growing but it's not taking over #Windows or #MacOS any day soon.
Just like Loops won't be #GenZ's go to for short form #Video content.

@hiphopheaven We could all populate #Loops with a ton of great stuff...
You think #GenZ wants to see our content from Millenials, GenX and Boomers?
That's not a selling point, it makes it pretty cringe to them.
They also don't care what underlying tech it uses, just like all those who left for #Bluesky don't care about #decentralization.
No #Algorithm in loops & no advertising money = Something cool here, but little meaning elsewhere to most folks using social platforms.

@hiphopheaven Here's the reality of the #Fediverse at present, screenshot taken a moment ago from #fedidb
11.8 Million Accounts, 949.9K active accounts - Down 3.1% from last month.
So no plans on advertising outside of the #Fediverse, #Bluesky keeps growing and #Loops is going to overtake or even compete in any way with #TikTok with #GenZ's help from a ton of content provided by #Millenials, #GenX and #Boomers.
Does this actually seem realistic to anyone here?
@hiphopheaven I also don't hear anything about how #Loops plans on #marketing itself to #GenZ.
Where's that money coming from?
What platforms will ads run on?
Word of mouth only? To whom? #Fediverse users? #Mastodon users?
I've been in charge of projects that were well funded during my career. I ask real questions because i've gotten real results living in the real world where bullshit doesn't fly, results do.
@hiphopheaven I agree with that as well, to a degree.
But you bring up a great point, and here we don't have algorithmic feeds which is a huge hurdle and why many don't stay here.
It takes too long to build your feed with content you want in an age of instant gratification. #GenZ especially isn't the group that is going to come here and stay despite that.
So marketing #loops as the #TikTok app #GenZ will use when they went to #RedBook during the short ban is a pipe dream imo.
9. "Maybe they’re not showing up because generationally they’re hearing or seeing something about Trumpism that is actually appealing."
10. "Trumpism may simply feel unreal or disorienting for them even more intensely than it feels for older Americans."
I'd add that there's an increasing trend of young people globally to look at the political (and religious) right and outright fascism as attractive.
And this is happening, in part, because super-rich elites and their allies in the tech industry have groomed and cultivated young people for that move towards fascism for some time now.
I'd note that a shocking percentage of young voters actually chose Trump in 2024 — especially young males.
I don't see calling young people to accept responsibility for making such political choices as condescending. This call acknowledges their agency as adults.
6. "The kids don’t trust anybody over 30, and for better reason than the Baby Boomers when they first gave voice to that sentiment."
7. "The kids are conflict-averse."
8. "Maybe they’re just waiting for some leader, some charismatic voice, some movement, to call them into the struggle directly, to speak to them intimately, to recognize their specific situation and mindset in a way that isn’t patronizing."

3. "It’s certainly possible to argue that many young people are living in a bubble reality that's full of discursive intensity in online media that is matched by a kind of thinness of real-world material experiences."
4. "It may be that the kids are, entirely reasonably, in a fatalistic mood."
5. "The kids have no model for cross-class solidarity in American life."

Where were the young people, those in the age group 18-30, during the No Kings demonstrations, Timothy Burke asks? Citizens of that age group were conspicuously absent at No Kings.
Why?
Burke (who's a college educator dealing with folks in this age group) offers a gamut of possible answers to his question:
1. "The kids are scared."
2. "The kids have no frame of reference besides Trumpism."
