"If we ever got to the point in which a president was sending the military into cities for purely political reasons, aggressive policing wouldn’t be our most urgent problem. Our most urgent problem would be authoritarianism.

And so here we are."

Columnist Philip Bump left the Washington Post last month after accepting a buyout. For his Pbump blog, he writes about power — who has it and is using it responsibly and how to preserve your own — and why he is not a fan of Twitter/X or Substack. "There’s value to debate and conversation, of course, but that isn’t what’s fostered on Twitter or (in my limited experience) on Substack. Instead, conversation occasionally glimmers through a waterfall of bad-faith, uninformed trolls and attacks. It’s an effort to play a college football game after the crowd has stormed the field."

Who is Anne Applebaum?

The Polish citizen and spouse of former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland, Radosław Sikorski, is a world wide renowned journalist pubishing in leading magazines like The Atlantic, the Economist and The Washington Post.

She is especially popular in Germany where her articles and books have some influence on the public discourse. 2024 the important Friedenspreis des Deutschen Buchhandels (Peace Price of German Book Trade) was added to her long list of awards.

The journalist James Jackson just posted an article of Anne Applebaum from January 2002 on Insta

in which she defends Israeli attacks on Palestinian meda as legitimate acts of war which gives some food of thought in these days of systematic deadly attacks on Palestinian journalists.

This of course was known to the jury at the Frankfurt book fair that decided last year to award Anne Applebaum the prestigious peace price exposing the German Staatsräson once more as a blood soaked example of political moral.

Fairness & Accuracy In Reporting

FAIR looked at 15 different news outlets’ initial coverage of the murders of six Palestinian journalists. We found that they overwhelmingly centered Israel’s narrative, attempted to delegitimize pro-Palestinian sources, and failed to contextualize the killings within the larger context of the genocide.

"The top story of the moment is the one story that our most influential newsrooms won’t touch: That the United State has become an authoritarian state. …

They obscure reality under a haze of incremental stories, each one presented as if what is going on is fairly normal. As if it’s just politics."
