We* investigated how QoL/ #HRQoL instruments were used as outcome measures in substance and behavioural addictions. We found similar issues as this team regarding wide variety of measures, lack of theory, and issues around methodological quality:

TITLE: Gum disease may quietly damage the brain, scientists warn

URL: https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2025/10/251029100147.htm

People with gum disease may have higher levels of brain white matter damage, a new study finds. Researchers observed that participants with gum disease had significantly more white matter hyperintensities, even after accounting for other risk factors. The findings hint that chronic oral inflammation could subtly impact the brain, especially in older adults. More research is needed, but keeping gums healthy might protect the mind too.

I got an inspiration to write a "stream of consciousness" blog post about my lifelong struggles with mental health.

It touches on some pretty heavy topics, but I feel like I was finally able to really unleash my creative writing spirit that has been suppressed for so long.

Give it a read if you'd like.

Mental health struggle

It's a shame that we are living in such a self-centered, individualist society. Everything is always your own fault - a convenient way to shift blame from the abuser, onto the abused. We live in the age of the "myth of rugged individualism," where everything must begin and end with

#Trump must release millions in #grants meant to address the shortage of #MentalHealth workers in #schools, a federal judge ruled.

#Congress funded the program after the 2022 #Uvalde #SchoolShooting. The grants were intended to help schools hire more #counselors, #psychologists & #SocialWorkers, & focus on rural & underserved areas. But Trump’s admin opposed #diversity considerations used to award the grants & told recipients they wouldn’t continue past Dec 2025.

Journaling is a habit that can be very helpful for our mental health, especially if we focus on noticing what's going well.

Combined with drawing, it can use more areas of your brain.

Personally, urban sketching is great as it also encourages me to go for a walk.

Journaling and brisk walking for 15 minutes are 2 habits proven to improve mental health, over 21+ days.

TITLE: Scientists discover a surprising way to quiet the anxious mind

URL: https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2025/10/251027023816.htm

Generalized anxiety disorder affects millions, often trapping sufferers in cycles of fear and isolation that conventional medications barely relieve. At UCSF, neuroscientist Jennifer Mitchell is testing a pharmaceutical form of LSD called MM120, which has shown striking results in reducing symptoms by promoting neuroplasticity and easing rigid thought patterns. In clinical trials, a single dose significantly outperformed standard treatments, offering hope to those who have found little relief elsewhere.
