You don't need to be a stable genius to understand where the winners and losers are in this scenario."

Friends, my roommate bailed on me with almost no notice, and I am trying to raise funds to to be able to stay where I am. Rent here is crazy and I can't afford it alone, so I am trying to raise 3 months of their share until I can find and vet a new roommate.
I had my first roommate interview a few nights ago. They texted me and told me they were on their way and never showed up.

United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs #UN #OCHA periodical update on #Gaza:
At least 71,667 Palestinians #killed by now, including¹ at least 20,179 #children (of which 931 younger than 1 year; 356 killed immediately after birth), and 10,427 #women.
More than 1,700 health workers killed.²
Since the ceasefire came into effect, 492 Palestinians were killed (including at least 100 children), 1,356 were injured.
Currently no comprehensive data on aid delivery. As of January 14th 2025, three crossings into Gaza were operational.
Currently no concise data on levels of food insecurity. In January 2025, for the first time since October 2023, stocks are sufficient to provide monthly food rations covering the minimum caloric needs of a household.
At 970 displacement sites, an estimated 1.3 million people are living; 795,000 of them live in in flood-prone areas.
The Israeli military remains deployed within more than 50% of the Gaza stripe (Yellow Line). Access to humanitarian facilities and assets, public infrastructure and agricultural land remain severely restricted or prohibited there, and detonations of residential buildings are reported.

Anyone who thinks Labour are on the side of renters when they are allowing private landlords a decade to bring their home up to a new Decent Homes Standard might think again
Clearly implementation cannot be immediate, there would always need to have been a transition time; but a decade?
Looks like Rachel Reeves (champion of landlords resisting the ground rent cap) was more successful this time in protecting profits for landlords for another 10 years.

🧵1/ #Snow Emergency vs. #Community Care: The Donut Run 🍩❄️
🗣️This morning, I saw a call from the Malden Warming Center: they needed someone to pick up donuts from Honey Dew for our guests. So I bundled up, shoveled out, and made the delivery.
⚠️We’re in a snow emergency, with freezing temps across the region. The Center is staying open all day to ensure our guests have safe shelter, warmth, and care.
🙏🏽 I’m deeply grateful to the volunteers at the Malden Warming Center—and at shelters across the…

region—who show up with compassion and consistency.
📣 Support your local nonprofits. Their work is only possible with community partners, donors, and volunteers. Every bit counts.

In a Gifu Prefecture community in which roughly half of the residents are age 65 or older, people are helping one another with everyday problems in what could be a model case for an aging society. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2026/01/19/japan/society/japan-aging-society-mutual-support/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #japan #society #gifu #aging #elderly #housing #volunteers
