Have't found them here on Fedi (they do have a BlueSky - https://bsky.app/profile/betterrenting.bsky.social - but I did just get this from Better Renting over email, and I'm sure I'm not the only one trying to figure out getting on it ASAP.

"You may have heard about the Residential Tenancies Standards Amendment Bill, which was created to introduce standards for heating, cooling, insulation, ventilation, and energy-efficiency in rental homes. We made a submission in favour of the Bill, as did other community organisations.

The SA Select Committee for the bill has just shocked us by finalising their report and calling for a vote on the bill all within the past 24 hours.

The Committee now hasn't given anyone time to read through the report or weigh in, but here's the worst part: their verdict is that the bill isn't appropriate and that it should not be progressed, despite overwhelming support from the community and advocacy organisations like us.

This is on the heels of an announcement from the SA government that developers will now be allowed to build apartment complexes that force the people who live in them to share communal bathrooms and kitchens.

As Greens MP Rob Simms put it, it seems unbelievable that we have "a government that is seriously talking about removing the requirement for private bathrooms and kitchens in new developments, and even the basics like fly-screens and draught-proofing rentals are considered a bridge too far."

The vote is happening in a few short hours, so we need SA renters and allies to call MPs: share your opposition to this shocking move and voice your support for the Residential Tenancies Standards Amendment Bill now, before its too late!"

So... yeah, if you've got the free time (ofc this happens early afternoon mid-week when many people won't), I don't know how much impact can be had but it's worth calling and seeing what can be achieved. CPC-CG's Bernice Kuang, a research fellow in #demography at the University of #Southampton, claimed #Londoners still wanted to have an average of two #children, but that this was not feasible for many in the #capital.

She blamed a shift from #socialhousing to private #renting in inner #London, adding that "private rented accommodation is not seen as the place to start a #family".

EDIT: Landlord responded by kicking us out (refusing to renew the lease even after having already offered to renew it). So be careful if you try this at home.

Gonna send this email to landlord, please copy, adjust and send to yours as well:

Hello,

I am writing to make some ground rules known, to be followed from here on out.

I will not be taking phone or voicecalls, as you have made it clear that I need everything in writing. You have not kept your word in the past. I expect that to change.

I will not be answering the same questions over and over again. If I have gone to the trouble of informing you of issues or even provided pictures and videos, I expect you to refer back to my email or text before asking me to provide the same information again. You can ask for clarifications if needed.

Unless specified otherwise, I give permission for you to share the information I have given you whith the relevant people needed to adress the issue, for example repair people, contractors, plumbers, chimney sweep. In fact you need to let them know what their tasks will be and make sure they come prepared, equipped and with enough human power and time to safely complete the necessary tasks.

I am not your slave driver. If a contractor arrives again unprepared and underequipped for the work at hand, I will not ask them to endanger their health by doing the task anyway.

You need to give me a reasonable amount of time to answer your questions before restating them. If a matter is not urgent, I may take a full work day to respond. If the matter is trivial, I may take two weeks. If I cannot give an answer yet, I will wait until I can actually answer your question (for example: "Was the problem fixed?" can only be answered after the contractor has had time to fix it).

I am willing to keep you up to date on the issues with the property, but you also need to fulfil your duties as owner and landlord. I am not going to go out of my way to do your work for you.

I also need you to give me the relevant information I need in order to fulfill my own duties as tenant. It would have been useful to get the contact information or at least company names of the usual services (trash collection, septic tank emptying, chimney sweep). I did ask about these upon moving in.

- [same name as on lease]
