Researchers found one of the factors that contribute to dementia is hearing loss and the overwhelmingly distressing feelings that accompany it.
Frustration and anger from trying to communicate with a world that is not interested in making an effort to accommodate hearing impaired; depression from the severe isolation when one can no longer effectively communicate with friends, loved ones, caregivers, and strangers;
depression also from losing the ability to hear what may have brought joy into one's life like music, the sound of a loved one's voice, sounds of nature (birds etc) ....
Imagine having to deal with the prospect of spending ones last years, at a time when we are vulnerable and most need assistance, in a world of confusing muffled sounds and voices, and feeling exhausted by the endless miscommunications --- I say those are good reasons to feel cranky.
This is one of the reasons why high tech hearing aids -Not the cheaper ones that simply amplify sound- are vital to the brain and mental health of seniors experiencing hearing loss.
Check with a doctor who specializes in geriatrics, they will agree.
