"Here are the beginnings of a pattern language for user interface design"
by @kentbeck in 1995
I recently got a new Thinkpad P14S. It is a nice computer for sure, but I think it is time to focus on the software side as well. Computers come with software and the software experience matters!
Some things I think should be covered in a review:
1. What OS does the machine come with? Having a choice would be nice, such as a Windows & Linux choice. Even better if you can test both before making a choice.
2. What software does the machine come with, both good and bad. If the machine comes with useful software, then that is great! Does it offer a choice of browsers?
3. Is it possible to get rid of all the bad stuff and how long does it take?
4. Does the machine allow local accounts? Does it force or trick you into using online services?
5. Does the machine have opt-in or opt-out of AI or does it force feed it?
6. Does the machine make it easy to switch OS after the fact?
I am sure I am not the only one that cares about stuff like this. When you buy a piece of hardware, it is to run software and making it easy to run the software you want should be what hardware makes should focus on, in addition to building great hardware.

when peeps speak of "legacy computing" i doubt many had thought of this wonder. pretty bloody amazeballs, afaict.
@frogglin -- a wee "expansion project" for you, perchance?

These next few years, #creative #arts will contend with intense #slopification. Considering this current, liminal public state, I recall an ep. of Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood in which Mr. Rogers compares the #Internet to make-believe.
“Your own imagination is far more wonderful than any computer could ever be. You know why: you’re a living #human being. And a #computer is just a machine. Human beings are far more wonderful than machines.”
His advice is as apt today » https://archive.org/details/ipoy143season29/1746.mp4

here in this piece @Cory Doctorow is describing the relation between human workers and ai. in particular what he calls "reverse centaurs" or other authors have named "accountability sinks".
there are lots of great insights in this article but one stood out for me: working with ai is not easy. people often think that having ai create texts for them is an innocuous thing. like OCR just more modern. but it isn't. errors made by ai can be very hard to spot. and doctorow here describes, why:
And because AI is just a word guessing program, because all it does is calculate the most probable word to go next, the errors it makes are especially subtle and hard to spot, because these bugs are literally statistically indistinguishable from working code (except that they're bugs).
[...]
And you, the human in the loop – the reverse centaur – you have to spot this subtle, hard to find error, this bug that is literally statistically indistinguishable from correct code.
as john oliver recently said:
welcome to the demise of our mutually shared reality! isn't it fun?!
