1/2 🇵🇱Warsaw, #Poland. A city that knows the cost of fighting for #freedom, and the bridge between my journey to and from #Ukraine.🇺🇦

🗣️As I look at monuments that commemorate the Warsaw Uprising and the heroes of this city, I’m reminded of my Ukrainian friends and the brave defenders fighting for their country. The struggles are different, but the fight for #democracy and against oppression is the same.

🌅 In the midst of this, I also saw the beauty of peace throughout the city,

2/2

…a powerful reminder of what is at stake.

So much history we need to learn from, so that we can stand in solidarity for a better future.🕊️

Here’s the back cover text for my forthcoming book, Defund Culture: A Radical Proposal –Why the Arts Are So White, Male, and Middle-Class and What We Can Do About It

https://openbookcollective.org/view/package/11/summary/

https://openbookcollective.org/books/book/5679981/

Calls to expand public investment in the #arts often treat the existing cultural and institutional landscape as a given. In Defund Culture, Gary Hall challenges this assumption.

The book foregrounds the structural inequalities that shape Britain’s #creative and intellectual life, producing culture that is safe, homogeneous, and anti-intellectual. ... Hall shows how the dominance of white, male, middle- and upper-class voices ... is sustained through longstanding funding arrangements and institutional hierarchies.

... Hall proposes redistributing resources away from elite institutions and toward more collective, #commons -oriented, and radically relational alternatives grounded in redistribution, institutional transformation, and epistemic pluriversality.

Dang, I passed by the #Øyafestivalen site on the way home today and it made me realise that 'festival season' is quickly approaching in #Oslo. 👯

From pop #music to #jazz, from #arts and #film festivals to stand-up #comedy -- there are so many #festivals happening throughout August that I tried to list a few on the @HvaSkjer account.

The story of the blue doll🇺🇦🇺🇸

🎁A gift from an incredible woman—Mrs. Olena.

She remembered me from my last volunteering in #Kyiv.🇺🇦

When she’s not weaving camouflage nets, she crafts handmade dolls for frontline defenders, too.✨

This one found its way to Malden.🇺🇸
I’m thinking of her. And the people of #Ukraine 🇺🇦
