Strawberry Switchblade backstage at Reading University, 42 years ago today, 12 Nov 1983.
Jill: ‘That was our dressing room – we had to get ready in the public toilets! There we are with a table of beer & crisps in the toilet. The glamour!’

PARTY BOYS
No Aggro
1984 U.S. pressing
Oh man, do I love this record. It’s been a long time since I’ve heard it.
This is a SUPER lo-fi mish-mash of #psych , #blues , and tribal #80s #artrock / #punk from Los Angeles.
The band only made three records (this one is their second), but each one is uncompromising and completely unique in their delivery.
There’s something oddly hypnotic about No Aggro, despite how incredibly Lo-fi sounding it is.
Maybe Pere Ubu-ish in some spots? Carrying the spirit of other bands like This Heat, but maybe a little more unhinged? I don’t know.
Regardless, even though it’s probably not for everyone, it’s worth a listen for the sake of pure art.
This record was limited to only 2,000 copies and is numbered #115 .

DESCENDENTS
Milo Goes To College
2010 U.S. reissue
While my wife gets ready to head out for the day for her birthday, a quick spin for me while I wait.
As I mentioned the last time I posted a Descendents record (I Don’t Want To Grow Up), this band and my early teenage years go hand in hand.
Grow Up, this, and Everything Sucks represent a very special time in my life, and I guess you could say I’m very sentimental about these records. However, I feel that as far as a lot of that simplistic punk from back then goes, Descendents records still sound great to my ears. I can still listen to them and enjoy them at 48, the same way I did when I was a teenager.
Not a single song longer than two minutes and ten seconds.
Absolute bliss, man.

41 years ago, #aha released the first video for "Take On Me", a standard fake band performance video that probably cost as little as possible. If you've ever wondered if the song would have been a hit without the video, I think this answers it. They released the song several times, only having major success once the animated video was made. Also interesting to hear the differences in this version of the song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uAqW9uJi2-g #1980s #MusicHistory #MusicVideo

One clarification gathered this weekend- Capital Radio was broadly 24h so this would have been available on the shows without phone call-in. I originally assumed it was happening while it was off air.
I’m honestly dreading asking my dad, despite him (still) being a telecoms engineer. My mother has clarified that this was before he had any knowledge in the area - once he did he was merrily installing what the American phreakers would call black boxes (which he called ERIC) into phones for friends, family, and plod from the local pub…

Oh my goodness. I think this is the only place on the internet nerdy enough to help me locate this info.
My parents met on a what was effectively an unofficial chat room hosted by capital radio (London). In the 1980s, Capital Radio used to leave their switchboard open at night (unintentionally, they didn’t realise it was happening) and people would call the regular radio phone and just end up in what was effectively a giant group call for Londoners late at night. (I say Londoners due to the reach of the radio rather than the phone line itself, people wouldn’t know the number unless they listened in).
I understand they changed how the phone system worked later in the 80s and closed this loophole off.
So what I’m after is…
- the nature of the switchboard that allowed this to happen
- what change would have blocked this later on
- any historic info on the period it was left open, or personal accounts.
