Scientists are moving from Twitter/X to Bluesky, drawn by its simpler design and less aggressive algorithms. 🧬
Still, Mastodon offers stronger privacy and open-source values, making it a better alternative for many. 🔒
Why not choose Mastodon? 🤔
Healthy, respectful science communication needs better social platforms. 🌐

"The acquisition of Twitter (now X) by Elon Musk in 2022 generated concerns among Twitter users regarding changes in the platform's direction, prompting a migration campaign by some user groups to the federated network Mastodon.
This study reviews the onboarding of users to this decentralised platform between 2016 and 2022 and analyses the migration of 19,000 users who identified themselves as supporters of the platform switch."
Columnist Philip Bump left the Washington Post last month after accepting a buyout. For his Pbump blog, he writes about power — who has it and is using it responsibly and how to preserve your own — and why he is not a fan of Twitter/X or Substack. "There’s value to debate and conversation, of course, but that isn’t what’s fostered on Twitter or (in my limited experience) on Substack. Instead, conversation occasionally glimmers through a waterfall of bad-faith, uninformed trolls and attacks. It’s an effort to play a college football game after the crowd has stormed the field."

Apparently, these are the current requirements for a creator so that Twitter will share revenue with them.
Was solls ...
Good morning everyone.
If you are on mastodon and miss the content of an X/twitter account, feel free to give me their X URL here: I will create a mirror of their tweets on mastodon.
Retoot this message if you want it to join the people who would have a use of that service. thanks !

Yeah, I knew some lovely people who worked at Twitter too. And did you know they once had unfettered API access and anyone could create their own client? Some of us loved that so much we built things that helped legitimise them as an open platform. And then one day they just switched that off.
Legitimacy is gold to venture-capital-funded startups. They need people with it to convince everyday folks that this latest iteration of the same old rug pull is different. Until they’ve grown so much that they don’t need it anymore, that is. I guess we haven’t learned that much after all.
You want to understand Bluesky? Imagine if Google had invented email and scaled Gmail before allowing others to set up their own email servers, knowing that maybe a handful would and that they were large enough to make the rules ad infinitum. That’s Bluesky.
Don’t fall for the latest venture-capital funded Silicon Valley social network no matter who tells you it’s fine and no matter how many words they use to do so. Especially when we’ve had a noncommercial and noncorporate alternative for close to a decade now in the form of the fediverse.
I know it’s a low bar but can we please at least get it through our thick heads that venture capital funded Silicon Valley Big Tech does not deserve the benefit of the doubt.
