In case anyone is looking for evidence of why the 'we value your privacy' promises of proprietary platforms are inherently empty, and can't be trusted ...

"Meta servers download every shared file in Facebook Messenger and Instagram DM in full—even if it’s gigabytes in size ... Meta insisted it wasn’t a bug. When we published videos demonstrating the issue, they asked YouTube to take them down."

As a bonus, smoking gun evidence that proprietary platforms don't really care about freedom of expression when it matters, despite their handwaving about "free speech" when it suits them;

@mysk
> Meta insisted it wasn’t a bug. When we published videos demonstrating the issue, they asked YouTube to take them down. YouTube removed one video and gave us a strike

They don't care about freedom of the press, so we must.

> [ #US Supreme Court] ruling green-lighted a wave of state-level #laws that allow meddling parents in conservative states to team up with personal injury #lawyers to sue people across state lines for untold damages (literally millions of dollars in some current cases) for a single paragraph of sexually-explicit speech on writers’ personal websites, if the parents think might harm the precious eyes and ears of their little munchkins.

"Fusion centers like #JRIC play a central role in how police understand #protest movements. The intelligence they produce is rapidly disseminated and draws heavily on open-source data. It often reflects broad, risk-averse assumptions and includes fragmentary and unverified information. In the absence of concrete threats, bulletins often turn to ideological language and social media activity as evidence of emerging risks, even when tied to lawful expression.

"DHS’s risk-based approach reflects a broader shift in US law enforcement shaped by post-9/11 security priorities—one that elevates perceived intent over demonstrable wrongdoing and uses behavior cues, affiliations, and other potentially predictive indicators to justify early intervention and expanded surveillance."

Speculation about Xi Jinping losing his grip on power overlooks how China’s evolving digital authoritarianism absorbs dissent through algorithmic control and selective visibility to reinforce CCP rule. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/commentary/2025/07/10/world/china-online-dissent/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #commentary #worldnews #china #ccp #chinesecommunistparty #freespeech #xijinping

Most science today is published in countries with low ratings for democracy and freedom of the press.
https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2025.07.03.663115v1

"In 2024, countries characterized as full democracies produced only 22% of the Scopus-indexed publications, versus 66% in 2006…78% of publications in 2024 came from countries with problematic (including USA) or worse (including China) freedom of press."

The authors took the democracy ratings from Democracy Index…

…and the freedom of the press ratings from Reporters Without Borders.

🧵2/2: #women form the bulk of pensioners & women don't like to see #babies dying of hunger, gun shots or bombs unleashed by #genocide. #Starmer is a cynical imbecile who underestimates the power of women and I trust he will hopefully soon be caught out for #complicity & general hostility towards the people who he owes his mandate to (Go #ZarahSultana!). The proscription of Palestine Action as a terrorist group starts tomorrow.

This is a dangerous escalation in the criminalisation of political dissent in the UK.

It’ll increase surveillance, particularly under the Prevent Duty, and censorship under the Online Safety Act.

At the heart of this decision is the logic of ‘pre-crime’.

Where the state intervenes not just against unlawful acts, but also against political expression that it considers might become threatening.

This turns activism into extremism. Legitimate political demands into a national security threat.

As there’s no public evidence of any link to terrorism or support of terrorist groups from Palestine Action, Open Rights Group supports their decision to appeal proscription.

While we may have differing opinions on their tactics, we stand against this attack on their right to exist and speak out.

Activity Pub

Trump and the far right movement is silencing online voices on an unprecedented scale.

At DevCollab we're working with some nonprofits to understand and prepare for the greater threats on the horizon.

Here's my first post on our initial findings and advice. This is very much a topic of uncertainty and shifting terrain. Feedback and shared experience is very much welcomed.
