@VictimOfSimony @ViennaMike@mastodon.social If I was suddenly planetary overlord, I'd ban the advertising industry. Seriously, it's cultural poison. Doesn't matter whether it's cheap spam or brand marketing for YSL, it's garbage all round, designed to manipulate us into doing things we wouldn't otherwise do (for someone else's profit).

As a #PublicPolicy wonk I'm already remembering how different our common law legal systems have become in just three centuries. Over here they're still worried about the anti-porn #Censorship case where the #SupremeCourt refused to define what they were censoring. They famously said, "I know it when I see it," grumble grumble prurient use in commerce, harrumph typical opinion of ordinary firmness, followed by thirty years of chipping off corners without admitting they were sort of making shit up.

It looks like Iran has successfully built a national 'walled garden' to control internet connectivity - both halting outsiders from communicating with those in Iran who are protesting, but also halting Iranians' ability to access the world wide web's myriad resources.

How well this 'wall' can be maintained remains to be seen but authoritarian regimes around the world will be watching, that's for sure.

It should be impossible for the ITU to deny that internet shutdowns in Iran demonstrate fundamental flaws with digital sovereignty rhetoric for human rights in both policy and global internet governance https://www.techpolicy.press/irans-case-should-put-an-end-to-illusions-about-digital-sovereignty/

Iran’s Case Should Put an End to Illusions About Digital Sovereignty

Iran’s case shows why digital sovereignty won’t solve internet shutdowns or unchecked private dominance over digital infrastructure, writes Azadeh Akbari.

Signal is centralised and was attempted backdoored by the uks online safety bill and saved by signal threatening to walk. Simplex is open source and quantum resistant e2ee like signal and also has its secret group chats and metadata protection like Signal but SimpleX is also decentralised with ip protection, tor support, no persistent id basically "a burner phone for every contact"
Signals centralisation also makes it more vulnerable to total censorship, all you need to do is block signals domains, being a decentralised network SimplexChat has no single point of failure to censor and anyone can run their own relay node

Iran’s move to cut internet access during ongoing mass protests, along with Uganda’s Tuesday ahead of controversial elections, are the latest examples of how some governments use digital blackouts to muzzle dissent. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2026/01/14/world/politics/countries-internet-blackouts-dissent/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #worldnews #politics #afghanistan #sudan #ethiopia #myanmar #kasmir #iran #nepal #tanzania #internet #censorship

Looks like the #government of #Iran manages to enforce #censorship even beyond landlines and cell connectivity. They managed to render #Starlink terminals useless by jamming #GPS signals:

https://restofworld.org/2026/iran-starlink-internet-shutdown/

Rest of World

Iran crippled Starlink and why the rest of the world should worry

The service became synonymous with censorship-proof connectivity. Iran has just proved that assumption wrong.
