Eastern Promise

A November day exploring the south-eastern coast of #Iceland from Mýrar to Djúpivogur.

12pm and we're approaching the mountains leading down to Stokksnes. Laxárdalur valley is visible between the peaks.
1pm, crossing Lón towards Svínhólafjall mountain.
2:30pm we reached Lækjarvík¹ with the mountains of Melrakkanes ahead.
4pm and sunset across Djúpivogur² harbour and a few of the peaks of Berufjörður.

A colour shot of a harbour nestled in a bay. The background is a mountain range, snow-capped and lit by sunset from behind the viewpoint. The water is ruffled and dark but reflects the sunlight colour. Many fishing boats are moored and the harbour is surrounded by small buildings.

A photo of a mountain range under a clearer sky but with a bank of cloud above the peaks. The heights are snow- and ice-capped and the sunlight is from the left this time. Closer to the viewpoint is brown vegetation strewn with rocks and studded with boulders.

A shot of an imposing mountain with a deep cleft in its flank, scooped out into a bowl by erosion. The shadows from the sunlight are highlighting the contours. There's a light dusting of snow on the top. The foreground is more grassland, mostly brown but some green with sheep and swans scattered across it.

Glacial River Canyon

Jökulsárgljúfur¹, the eponymous gorge in north-eastern #Iceland contains seven major waterfalls. Here, we stop by three of them.

The first in our photo visit is Hafragilsfoss, the beautiful "Buck Canyon Falls."
The second is Selfoss, a lovely horseshoe hidden in its own mists.
Finally Dettifoss, the "tumbling falls," in my opinion the most impressive waterfall in Iceland.

Another view of the honey-coloured rock walls of the canyon, its basalt teeth very obvious in the strong sunlight from the right. The river is plunging over the lip of a high waterfall, the base - not visible in this shot - is 44 metres or 144 feet below. This photo is taken from height again.

Another canyon with the same large river running through it. The water is tumbling down the rockface between stumps of basalt rock, and churns powerfully as it leaves the base of the drop. A group of five people are standing near the crest. The sky is clear, but pale.

A colour photo of a deep canyon with brown rock walls, viewed from height. The cliffs are basalt teeth, standing vertically. A river is surging through the gorge to a narrow slot above an elevated shelf where the white water is dropping 27 metres or 88.5 feet to the canyon floor.

I tried to resist, but here are some images from the last few years. This is why I hike, this is why I take photographs.
