Diamond Beach

Sometimes, crowded places are useful for lending scale.

This was one of the clearest shots I could get of Vestri-Fellsfjara, all along the beach were crowds of other tourists. It was helpful, though, in showing the scale of the icebergs washed out into the sea from Jökulsárlón by the ebb tide.

Just off-shore, where the incoming waves are meeting the outgoing lagoon water, there's an impressive semicircle of breaking surf.

It was such an interesting find. Two layers of rocks - higher and lower. The higher ones had this red growth all over the place and just none on the lower level. I thought probably the lower level goes underwater during the high tide, that's why.

Say My Name, Sun Shines Through The Rain

A day of showers and sun, lots of rainbows and some sudden downpours.

From under a blanket of heavy cloud, we looked towards the headland and saw this breathtaking sight, sunbeams streaming through a heavy rain shower on the shore of Hlíðarfjall.

Looking across Álftafjörður in south-eastern #Iceland.

And the title? The Bangles 1989 song "Eternal Flame."

Playtime

Nobody is quite sure why bottlenose dolphins and pilot whales choose each other's company. Perhaps they find food more easily, or the large pods provide safety.

All I know is that one beautiful day in September, they followed our boat for half an hour as we were whale-watching.

They were leaping through the water of Skjálfandi bay with joy, and just because they could. What more reason could they need?
