The cliff face in the background is again the medium dark geolic layer transitioning into a lighter layer at the top. A thin strip of dark clouds is above the cliffs walls.

This wonderful sandstone formation, unfortunately named by colonialists as "De Gaulle and His Troops" in the further unfortunately named by colonialists "Valley of the Gods," is, no matter how poorly named, a favorite feature on mine. Here it is beautifully lit as the sun broke over a nearby mesa top.

The feature angles across the frame from center-right and disappearing off the center-left. On the far right is a vertical twin spire like a two prong fork. The prong furthest right is narrow and short while the prong on the left is wider and taller. Behind the feature on the right is a second blocky sandstone mass that looks like a large building or apartment complex with a lot of eroded material surrounding its base. A beam of sunlight strikes the feature on the far right and angles down lighting the base of the large block on the left. Otherwise the scene is dark and the sky is filled with dark clouds.

Stupid winter. Cabin fever has set in and I'm already jonesing for canyon country. Right about now unplugging and dropping into a remote canyon never to be seen again sounds like a good idea, right?

The Grand Canyon & the Kolb Studio, which was begun in 1906 by photographers Emery & Ellsworth Kolb. The Kolb's were hardcore canyoneers. They carried their early--big & heavy--photographic equipment all over the Canyon. Sadly, the building is now a gift shop & the Kolb brother's history has been relegated to a tiny closet featuring a couple of their photos & a short video about their lives.

Beautiful colors and panoramic views from the Mount Washburn Fire Lookout camera last night. The foreground shows a section of the trail system used to access the mountain. Lit by the sun, the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone cuts through the center of the image. In the distance on the right, the Tetons in Grand Teton National Park can just be seen. Blue sky, an arrangement of clouds, green vegetation, sunlit canyon walls, combine to create a wonderful scene from one of the most spectacular sites in Yellowstone National Park.
