For contrast, this is a happy man on signing day.
And todays gadget solar is this bench spotted outside Halle (Saale) Hbf. Whilst not quite as bonkers an idea as solar between the tracks (see previous rant). The extra ruggedisation required for the panels to make them suitable for sitting on seems an expensive way of doing solar. I find myself wondering if a larger panel that acted as a shade for the seating would not be a better option.
@quixoticgeek Oh boy, I can't wait to sit down on a panel that's been out in the sun all day and instantly sear my flesh to edibility!

Sometimes when people run a forum or even on social media the long time participants will notice that they answer the same questions over and over and over... this may lead to forum rules that ban posts that are repeats of old questions.
I think this is almost always a mistake if you are trying to build a community. It's helpful and good to link to similar older posts, but nothing makes a community feel insular than being told none of your questions are new and RTFM.

If you're going to talk to a smart assistant out loud in front of other people, at least give your shortcuts names which sound like like trashy thrillers.
Tired: Hey Siri, turn out the lights.
Wired: Siri, activate the Hades contingency. Alexa, initiate project Dædalus. Okay Google, proceed to omega phase.
Start with a dramatic action verb like "engage", "commence", or "execute". Throw in a mythological figure which needn't have any actual relation to the action set. Then round it out with a nonsense word from an espionage drama, like "protocol", "sequence", "directive", or so on.

In case you are unaware in September schools in England will have to force trans kids into spaces based on their birth sex and, if they feel uncomfortable, segregated into other spaces.
Parents must generally be informed and the kid will have little say in what happens to them.
Schools will not be able to teach anything about questioning your gender
Bigoted teachers will have the right to not support trans kids and essentially the right to be transphobic

The more I work on Hollo, the more its Mastodon-compatible API feels like a straitjacket. I chose it for a practical reason: people could use existing clients, and I wouldn't have to build a frontend too. I still think that was the right call at the time.
The problem is that clients can only expose what Mastodon's API represents. I keep coming up with ideas, then asking whether the API has anywhere to put them. If it doesn't, I have no way to get the feature in front of users.
ActivityPub API (so-called “C2S”) might be the eventual answer, but it doesn't help much today. I don't know of any clients Hollo users could realistically use with it, and adoption is still limited.
So I keep coming back to the idea that Hollo will need a frontend of its own. I'd keep the Mastodon API for existing apps. I'm not especially eager to take on a whole frontend, but I don't see another way to try ideas that don't fit Mastodon's model.
@hongminhee clarifying questions:
1. How does having a client solve the storage of runtime data problem?
2. Is the Mastodon instance API that implements ActivityPub not rich enough to support the functionality?

I have known a lot of people who have chosen van life, including some with PhDs. I considered it myself for a while, but opted out for the time being.

Yesterday, proofs came of my new novella, The Blossoming of the Big Tree, and it got me a bit excited. I have got print copies of my books before, but not one I designed from scratch. I was worried about how the cover would look like, and also because I used LibreWriter for typesetting, if the font was the right one, etc, but it all looks nice and cute. Proud of myself. 😊
