Someone smarter than me said that when you're writing about people who are different from you, a good guide is to think of the people who sit at your kitchen table. Those are the people you can feel comfortable representing in your books.
Does anyone know what quote I'm talking about and who said it? I want to refer to it in a blog post and attribute it properly if I can.

Well, I'm Dutch, Dyslexic, Neurospicy, and far too fond of an antiquated lexicon, so not very. But for all traditionalists, the most irksome aspect in my writing is that it is present tense!

I wrote a thing! This is no. 5 of my 'Unexpected Bestiary' articles where I introduce you to wildlife you may not have come across and then speculate on how it could be used in fictions and fantasy worlds.
In this issue, we meet an amphibian that might be escaping Mephistopheles, a bird that sacrificed effective flight for junk food that makes it burp constantly, and what might be the drunkest creature in existence...
I prefer writing with fewer characters, two at the most, as I do with the Wolves.
However, I have written ensemble casts, most notably the LitRPG I plan to publish in fall. It's not only epic in plot but also in the character list. Ahem.
Wrangling that many is demanding and not always fun.

[Lefeng] didn’t regret stopping to help the youngling. But ey was tired of this village. Tired of the hostile people. Tired of being trapped in a strange building. Ey wanted to get back on the trails. Deep in the trees and mountains where ey might, for a time, forget.
Might, if lucky, find another farwalker family that would accept em among them. If only as a travel companion.
But ey couldn’t leave while the youngling and the Deepfisher were not safe.
Sometimes, when ey heard one of the villagers bad mouthing the Deepfisher, ey found eir hand clutching the long knife at eir hip. But this was not a problem that could be settled by fighting it.
Lefeng wasn’t sure it could be settled at all.

Friends, Friendship. Teammates. Buddies. Partners in crime†. Frankly, I don't get it. I do the job and make sure everybody comes back. I train them until they drop in a sweaty heap, but then they insist on group meals and singing, that stuff, and won't let me pay. Sure I have everybody's back in a fight, or with clients, or the boss, but that's the right thing to do. I am responsible for them. They ask me for advice, too. Sometime weird. I ended up punching the cheating husband when he made a pass at me, which was actually sort of fun. At times they won't leave me along to be quiet with my books, which is really all I want out of life. I am really the wrong person to ask such a question to.

It's not so much "refuse" as "just don't want to." I will probably never write something where the protagonists are cops or soldiers. I'm bored with that perspective, and it's hard to avoid it being propaganda. Not interested.

The beta readers have all stalled out, life intervening. I've waited. I want to ask nicely, but the "how" and the how-to-do-it-effectively is escaping me. I kinda feel that plugging in my commanding tech-support persona to overcome my shy-person normal nature won't cut it.

Yes. She's aware of it but hasn't resolved it. She lives in a society where worker collectives are the cornerstone, but she knows a huge portion of the world doesn't enjoy the level of wealth she's surrounded by. So she's raised to think like an anarcho-syndicalist but quite aware that she's of the moneyed class by world standards.
