Are you in glorious STL? I will be there too, tomorrow night, 8/8, to talk about Automatic Noodle with the incredible Crystal Odelle at @leftbankbooks.bsky.social. Join us at 6pm, if you like noodles and robots! https://www.left-bank.com/event/annalee-newitz-automatic-noodle #bookstodon #stlouis #books #scifi
People are so weird. For the same book, one reviewer complained that it was an “overload of dry statistics” and the other panned it for relying on oral history rather than “fact.” My conclusion - authors can never win! #Books#Bookstodon

I found this delightful book "Fishes of the Wissahickon Creek", by R. Bruce Gebhardt, at the Free Library in Chestnut Hill. It is theoretically possible to order it from the Academy of Natural Sciences (tho my order has not arrived yet): https://secure.touchnet.com/C20688_ustores/web/store_cat.jsp?STOREID=73&CATID=514&SINGLESTORE=true
The intro says he also self-published "Butterfly Blocks: The Butterflies of West Mount Airy (2002-2004)". I tried asking the Academy about it and they know nothing. Any ideas for finding a copy?

i saw that crimethinc's demonstrator's guides were gaining traction (again) on here, so i decided to format them into one collection and printed off 30 of them to share.
i'm an amateur, so these are not publishing house quality -- but hey, they work fine, and the info and pictures are all there.
includes very detailed info on:
helmets, goggles, masks, armor, various police tactics and tools, blockades, lockdowns, and banners.
if you would like one, send me a direct message or email with a mailing address and i'll send one -- it's only ~$4 to ship, so i'm willing to cover the cost myself. if you're in the portland, oregon area, please arrange for a drop off or pick up.

I finally finished Babel by R.F. Kuang - 4/10
Honestly, I was really disappointed in this one after absolutely loving the Poppy War series.
This book cleverly highlighted the pain of oppression through language and a magic system which powers the British Empire.
But, for me, it took too long to get going. I was never committed to the relationships within the friend group because the characters all felt pretty thin (perhaps until the last couple of chapters).
Gang, when you want to send to a friend a link to a book so they can see the cover, author, summary, ISBN etc, what service do you use?
I’m not too keen on sending links to Goodreads because I don’t like being part of the Amazon funnel.
I’d like to link to a stable service to avoid link rot too. Any recommendations?

Just finished Red Team Blues by Cory Doctorow. Engaging story that just pulls you along so well you don't want to put it down.
By luck of the Libby draw, I ended up reading the series in reverse order but still enjoyed every one. Thanks for the wonderful story, @pluralistic ! Looking forward to the next Marty Hench tale!

Insane.
I’m reading the book by Marietje Schaake.
She mentions Uber’s Greyball program.
I had almost forgotten about it.
‘Once [Uber’s] software had spotted users close to law enforcement offices, the user was promptly served a different, tailor-made experience in a parallel app named Greyball… this made it nearly impossible for those users to get a ride.’
