OpenAI and Perplexity, armed with significant AI capabilities, have targeted the shopping domain. And have run into many problems around data access and semantics.
This raises three thoughts:
First, companies which are bullish about AI “changing everything”, are stumbling in maybe the most traditional, mundane domain: shopping. This doesn’t inspire confidence in their technology.

🛍️ Shopping mall showdown (or, shopping centre, if you're British)!
Which one do you think looks cooler? First is a 1990s mall in the North of England, second is a 1980s example from Germany. Let me know in the comments!

Happy New Years pocket friends!
A year ago, I began microblogging about my #NoBuyYear2025 where my family made a commitment to reduce our consumption of non-essentials. I definitely can say I am so happy we did this. It has totally changed the way I think about #shopping and #money and #consumerism.
We thought of it as a traffic light system. We had a ‘green list’ which was what we decided was essential and we were allowed to buy. Then we had an ‘orange list’ which meant we looked second-hand first and only elevated it to buying new if we had to, then, well, red for non-essentials is a bit self explanitory isn’t it? Each person also got an allowance that was exempt from these rules.
At first, I thought of posting about all the things I bought each month. I stopped that after February because I realised that the idea was more about what I wasn’t buying and about changing my relationship with consumerism.
In this year, I learned that I can be much happier with much less, and I stopped feeling constant anxiety and stress over money; even when my income dipped to the lowest it’s ever been for a few months in 2025.
Gonna have another post in the next few days about my intentions for the next year.
So, what are your aspirations for the coming year?

We were out shopping at Barrington Mall today and I was surprised to see this big sign saying “Shopping is pointless” next to a photo of a happy woman in a field of flowers.
My first thought was that it’s some surprisingly on point anti-commercialism messaging to see in a mall at Christmas time.
Then I realised that a word was being blocked from view. When I made a few steps to the left, the whole sign reads “Shopping elsewhere is pointless.”
They were so close!

If you're in the US and into doing some shopping today, you might take a look at the 99% off sales (yes, really, not a typo) from Cards Against Humanity. Some very odd things (and some not-so-odd things) go on sale for a very limited time, with new things popping up all the time.
Example: A reprinted copy of Jeffrey Epstein's 50th Birthday Book
But also: A Hermès Birkin Bag
The one that just popped up as I'm typing this: Coal from The Titanic

A: Absolutely.
Q: ARE THESE DEALS FUNDED BY YOUR PROCEEDS FROM THAT ELON MUSK LAWSUIT?
A: No comment.
