Tomorrow is Black Friday. Here's the cartoon I did last year. I'll share a new one tomorrow (with a similar point, but a new visual :)
Black Friday. Cartoon for Trouw.
Great NYT video story about a little piece of technology that has delivered enormous benefits to consumers — and is in danger of disappearing. It’s called the price tag. Yes, the price tag.

Wow. I have not received a single black Friday promo Email this year. Haven't read any "news" articles about black Friday.
I don't know when black Friday is and I couldn't be less interested in knowing.
I must be doing something right in this personal escape from capitalism I'm doing, step by step.
Now, if only Christmas would be as easy to ignore. 🥲

I don't need any Christmas gifts! I have too much stuff! I'm drowning!
The greatest gift I could get would be a holiday where family and friends come to your home and each unburdens you of one item that's just gathering dust. Just take it away from me! Donate it to charity without me having to make the decision. What a load off my shoulders!
I think this is what we all need.
An antichristmas, if you will.

I'm bleeding right now because of capitalism.
Let me explain one by one:
* capitalism produces shitty products that have to be replaced regularly
* they send them in oversized cardboard boxes to be able to add more plastic around the product
* the cardboard box is more durable than the product
* i have more than once been yelled at by neighbors for putting boxes in the wastepaper bin without making them smaller first (usually they were filled with wastepaper, but the neighbors didn't see that)
* if capitalism didn't produce so much garbage, or there was enough money for a more frequent garbage collection, the neighbors wouldn't be stingy about space in the bin
* but capitalism wants us to be angry and miserable
* to avoid getting yelled at again I just tried to crunch a very big, very sturdy box
* I stepped on it
* the box didn't give in
* i slipped
* fell
* and hit my head
* hard
Die capitalism, die!

Group 1: "All these instructions on the internet say I need a computer or sometimes even two; who has that kind of money?"
Group 2: "I have sixteen fully operational laptop computers that I fished out of a dumpster that desperately need a good home, but no one will take them, so they're cluttering up my apartment."
It feels like some problems would be solved if these two groups could talk to each other, but somehow it never seems to work that way : (

GUIDE: How to Start a #ToolLibrary
#SyracuseUniversity - Institute for #Sustainability Engagement
October 29, 2025
" #Libraries can offer a lot more than just books. Whether it’s a #SewingKit or a step ladder, tool libraries can provide #SustainableSolutions for communities to complete their personal projects in a way that promotes #reuse, discourages needless #consumerism, and saves people money.
"The Institute for Sustainability Engagement ( #ISE) has prepared a printable 10-step guide to help anyone get started implementing a tool library in their community. This guide stems from ISE’s role in helping develop a tool lending library in #KeesevilleNY..."

#RepairEconomy Reinvigorated in Central #NewYork, #Syracuse Institute Leads the Charge
May 30, 2025
SYRACUSE, NEW YORK — "Broken lamps, torn clothes, a coffee machine that just won’t work — items like these are common in most households, and all too commonly wind up in the trash bin. Thanks to cheap replacements and a struggling repair economy, #consumerism —and waste — is at an all-time high. In the wake of #tariffs, #ClimateChange, and rapidly shrinking NYS #landfill capacity, a rising repair movement in Central New York is pushing back against the status quo.
"The Repair Cafe held on Saturday, May 10 embodies a social movement shaped by residents, #activists, and community leaders who want to reduce waste through building strong community networks. The event was facilitated by #RepairCafeCNY, an organization established by the Institute for Sustainability Engagement ( #ISE) as an offshoot of the global #RepairCafe network. The group aims to reinvigorate repair in Syracuse and the greater CNY region by serving as a central coordinator for free community repair events in the area.
"Repair Cafes are not a new concept to the area. The last known effort locally was that of the Syracuse Repair Cafe, which was operational for a few years before the pandemic halted operations. With repair energy now reinvigorated, organizers hope for the Syracuse Repair Cafe’s soon return."
