Heather Cox Richardson, speaking about the execution of Alex Pretti in Minneapolis today:

"23 people could stop this if they wanted to."

(Transcript excerpt)

27:05
But here's the other, and this is the reason that I am so angry.
27:12
You've heard me say this a lot. The Republicans could stop this tonight
27:20
if they wanted to. Elected Republicans could stop this
27:27
tonight if they wanted to.
27:32
And here's the thing. You know how many Republicans that would take?
27:38
16 Republicans. 16 Republicans voting with the Democrats.
27:45
This is a country of 340 million people. 16 people could stop this. And you could
27:55
actually impeach and remove Trump with 23.
28:00
23 people could stop this if they wanted to.

Renee Good and now Alex Pretti. These are just the 2 extrajudicial killings in the US that I know about, because I happened to see fediverse posts mentioning them. In the 90s, this was the kind of shit that routinely happened in the Global South, in Latin America or Africa or South East Asia, and it was horrifying. But it didn't happen in the US or Europe or Oceania. When Carlo Giuliani was killed during G8 protests in Genova, Italy, it was unprecedented and we were shocked.

Anyone still trying to convince themselves that what's going on in the US is business as usual, and nothing to worry about, wake the fuck up. It's not. It's like 1990s Brazil, or Nigeria in 1995.

People are being openly killed in the streets by an outlaw paramilitary, answering only to a demented rogue President. On whose orders US forces have kidnapped another country's head of state and taken control of their government.

This is outrageous and demands an extraordinary response.
