Things I'm digging with Mastodon 4.4:

- The ability to zoom in on media. Smooth and elegant

- The language button in the "write" box that lights up in yellow when another language has been automatically detected (I usually write in English or in French and regularly set it wrong first and have to edit the post - as I did on this one, for example)

- The audio controls

- The revamped mobile interface, though I probably won't use it much.

Kudos to the @Mastodon team!

Oh, my goodness. I boosted @Em0nM4stodon’s post about this earlier. But I need to share it with some intention.

This piece she wrote on Mastodon privacy/security is intense. It’s long. SO much information. Read it anyway. Seriously.

And if y’all don’t follow Em, do yourself a solid and get on that. She’s smart af about InfoSec/privacy/security. And super friendly.

Did a bit of User Experience testing on some #Mastodon #Fediverse printable materials. (thanks to @davidrevoy for the beautiful images)

So far, it's a 100% fail.

Users can not be linked from printable materials to an installable App which they can sign up to a local instance. i.e. If you run an instance and want to hand out invites at the farmers market, no one will be able to easily navigate the app store, the sign up process. There is context breakage.

The ability to pin multiple posts and have them visible at the top of your profile was among the features that made #Mastodon more appealing than other platforms. Now that's been wiped out overnight without any option for users to choose whether their profile reflects the change. What happened to respecting user's choice or preferences?

Whoever has been in charge of UI changes for the past couple of updates really needs to be assigned to something else. How much more are they going to destroy?

No one is going to see the tiny arrow controls and scroll sideways through the multiple pinned posts. They're just going to see the top one. Over time people will stop pinning any more than one post because there will be no point, and #Mastodon will be just the same as every other generic social media platform.

The pinned post carousel absolutely should have been an option in the settings, not swept across the board as a default.

In #Mastodon 4.4 they've added the horrible popup window from #Bluesky when you try to click on a #hashtag.

If I wanted to do something weird with the hashtag, I'd right click it. Now I need to make an extra click every single time I just want to view the posts. It's one of the worst features of Bluesky, and they've added it into Mastodon.

It doesn't even do anything useful like tell you if you're following the hashtag.

Every time they update the Mastodon UI they make it worse.

Also, how do I turn off the carousel that hides all of my pinned posts bar one?

When I pin posts it's because I want people to see them. Why the hell would I want almost all of them to be hidden?

Why was this feature rolled out by default instead of #optIn?

Hey everyone—hope you’re all doing okay out there. I want to share something important that’s been weighing on my mind: there have been credible reports about the instance dansu.org that are pretty disturbing. Folks have had their private info exposed without permission, trans community members have been targeted with hateful messages, and AI tools have been used to amplify all of this. It’s heartbreaking to see anyone subjected to doxxing or harassment, especially in spaces meant for connection and support.

We’ve always stood for kindness, respect, and safety in our little corner of the Fediverse. That’s why I’m asking you—if you help run an instance, if you moderate, or if you simply care about our community—to please take these steps:

Fediblock dansu.org right away so no more harmful content can spread.

Suspend any accounts tied to these violations and bump up your security settings to “high.”

Keep an eye out for any sneaky attempts to rejoin under a different name or address.

I know it can feel heavy to deal with stuff like this, but by standing together we protect each other. Thanks for looking out for everyone—especially those who might be more vulnerable. If you have any questions or need to talk about it, reach out. We’re all in this together. ❤️
