"Whatever nuance is needed for its interception, resisting AI’s further creep into intellectual labor will also require blunt-force militancy. The steps are simple. Don’t publish AI bullshit. Don’t even publish mealymouthed essays about the temptation to produce AI bullshit."
N+1 magazine with good advice (https://www.nplusonemag.com/issue-51/the-intellectual-situation/large-language-muddle/).
Fellow academics, I urge you to avoid using #generativeAI for your #research.

someone please make an image search system that filters out #generativeAI images
it is so, so miserable to search for images now.
In exchange for asking my students not to use #generativeAI, I've pledged to them that *I* won't use it. That means I will not use generated images for slides, for example, among other things (no generated summaries, no generated lectures, nothing).
But the slop is so ubiquitous that even looking for (for example) a picture of the pragmatist philosopher John Dewey returns AI-generated images.
To be blunt, this fucking sucks.

I'm going to teach my first undergrad course of 2025-2026 tomorrow, and I am going to share my #generativeAI policy with them, which is basically:
don't use it.
I don't ask students to do things I wouldn't do myself. To that end, along with some other folks, I wrote an "Organic Academic Pledge" -- a pledge to never use generative AI for our research:

Switzerland has launched #Apertus , a fully open-source, multilingual #LLM trained on 15 trillion tokens & over 1,000 languages. "What distinguishes Apertus from many other #generativeAI systems is its commitment to complete openness," reports CyberInsider.
Unlike popular proprietary models … Apertus provides open access to its model weights, training datasets, doc, & even intermediate checkpoints

Just had an orientation with first-year Communication and Media Studies students at York. Their number 1 concern about social media? #GenerativeAI and #AIslop.
Basically, they all want it moderated or regulated out of existence.

Suzanne Srdarov and I have a new publication out in the Oxford Intersection on AI and Society:
Generative Imaginaries of Australia: How Generative AI Tools Visualize Australia and Australianness
https://doi.org/10.1093/9780198945215.003.0150
It's paywalled, so we've also got a summary piece in The Conversation:
‘Australiana’ images made by AI are racist and full of tired cliches, new study shows https://theconversation.com/australiana-images-made-by-ai-are-racist-and-full-of-tired-cliches-new-study-shows-263117
but please ping me if need a PDF of the main piece! #generativeAI#Australia #racism #auspol

The latest FOSS Academic post involves more wrestling with the implications of #generativeAI for academic peer review:
https://fossacademic.tech/2025/08/06/reviewing-ai.html
In this post, I take observations from software #developers and #openSource podcasters (such as the folks at @latenightlinux ) about how genAI is swamping things like bug bounties and code reviews. This is similar to some of the issues faced by academic peer reviewers.

Having a deceased shooting victim give an interview as an AI avatar clearly gets a reaction, but I fear it's not the right one. It's such an important issue, but the novelty of this form of AI 'ghost' eclipses what is actually being said. It also begs some big ethical questions about data personal use!
