but I was at a loss for words. I was unable to explain how to tell the difference between an advertisement and necessary computer maintenance because I realized in that moment that the only reason *I* can tell is the cynicism and distrust that I've accumulated over time...

in particular, memory mapping sucks shit because "globally visible mutable address space" is fucking impossible to buffer or optimize. the AMD architecture specification is clear that mapped memory doesn't work like normal memory (atomics can't be guaranteed) and that essentially all operations will have varying performance characteristics depending upon the device (which does its best to translates mapped memory operations into the semantics of the underlying storage mechanism).
i.e. memory-mapped I/O lets the OS be lazy and shoves off complexity into the hardware. this is kind of absurd since the OS (as a form of software) can be updated and extended, while the hardware definitely is limited to the semantics of the physical universe. hardware constitutes a form of matter you can plug into a computer, and firmware updates do not in fact involve nuclear or even chemical reactions. and hardware costs fucking money, while software, like mathematics, can be obtained freely from others.

Today I received an email from Supermicro that they've released new BMC firmware and a BIOS for some systems I subscribed to. Nothing special.
That is, until I noticed what machine was listed. Introduced late 2015/early 2016 
I have never purchased whatever support. Both Supermicro and Dell work this way.
HPE does not. They require you to have overzealous support agreements, costing an arm and a leg. No agreement, no BIOS updates for you 
In most cases, companies do prefer these support agreements. Having someone to assist you when shit hits the fan for a (relatively) small stack of dough is a no-brainer.
However - this is completely fucked up. It really hurts the second hand market, homelabs, etc. Imagine not being able to patch against nasty silicon-level vulnerabilities because those fuckers want to see 5K of your hard earned cash

If the independent, non-slop web has any future at all, then now must be the time for every firefox fork to commit to working together to maintain a hardfork isolated from Mozilla.
It's a project that is too large to be handled by any small project alone (and maybe even all of them combined), but one that is too important to left under the guidance of an organization like Mozilla.
Without such bold co-operation I fear we have already lost.
@sarahjamielewis Sometimes I think the only way is to go even bigger. The whole ecosystem of software (and hardware) is so deeply poisoned at this point, we'd need to replace virtually everything. We need a new free software movement with a strong social awareness and a strict no-AI policy to replace, or at least compete with, the old FOSS movement and community.
I'm willing to contribute to such a movement, though my relevant skills are limited and the only resource I can offer is my time.

ActivityPub is that substrate. The Fediverse Beyond Mastodon series is complete. We published four posts about some of what's growing on it:
1. The microblogging platforms that aren't Mastodon: Misskey, Pleroma, Akkoma, Friendica, GoToSocial. Several predate Mastodon, and some were federating before ActivityPub existed.
2. The visual layer: Pixelfed, Loops, PeerTube. Your work sits on infrastructure you or your community control, and no ranking system decides who sees it.
3. The writing platforms: Ghost, WordPress, WriteFreely, Micro.blog, Plume, Flipboard. Each arrived at federation by a different route.
4. Forums, books, and music: Lemmy, PieFed, Mbin, NodeBB, Bookwyrm, Bandwagon.
