We need to separate identity from servers in the ActivityPub world. It's time. I should be able to have a single identity and use it with lots of servers from Mastodon to Lemmy and beyond.

Then, various instances could reflect different communities with different people in them, different features and policies.

This also would elegantly solve the "instance selection paralysis" in @tchambers 's Deadly Fediverse UX sin #1.

Fortunately @benpate is starting to assemble people to solve this.

I'd love for this to happen but we're also stuck in the stage of replicating corporate platforms, instead of thinking about what we can do that they can't.

#ghost and #wordpress are doing this by making the article an AP item, instead of linking to it from a post. Maybe lemmy and mastodon should merge. most people don't post videos so maybe they don't need a #peertube account. maybe it should function more like podcasts. same with #funkwhale and #bandwagon.

Actually, I have another #FediForumFriday post but this time a question; can anyone explain to me the pros and cons of blogging on my own website vs something like #Ghost?

I have checked their website comparison but the cost stuff doesn't impact me cos my website costs less than $9 a month to run, even with the plugins (most of the ones I use are free).
The advice always used to be "your own website is always better" - is that still true? Or am I old?

I love this. My only quibble:

"Back then, the model was about connecting information – documents – using funny-looking syntax. www followed by dot notation and slashes. Today, it's about connecting individuals – people – using funny-looking syntax. This time, @ symbols."

imo that's "social networking" but #ghost federating is really huge for "social media". adding an attention layer to the open web. letting people not money decide what goes viral. #DemocracyOfReach

"Federating Ghost means publishers no longer have to choose between owning their work and reaching an audience. You post once, on your own domain, and it travels everywhere—the network effect without the lock-in.

That's the dream.

While centralized networks are coming apart at the seams as battles rage between the most powerful people on earth who own them, the fediverse represents an alternative path."

My collection of verified accounts of news organizations, that can be followed from #Mastodon (& anywhere else in the #Fediverse) contains now:

564 federated by @Flipboard
404 on @Mastodon
45 federated by @threads
20 bridged thanks to @snarfed.org
3 federated by @index (#Ghost)
1 on @peertube &
1 on @sharkey

Maybe there are some #Canada based #fediverse devs already working on this, but I so wish there was a publishing platform that was #ActivityPub and #socialweb first, and specifically for public institutions in 🇨🇦

Very similar to how #Ghost works (built-in to core). Followable anywhere on the social web. Bus route updates, water restriction updates, weather alerts...one domain per municipality, difft accts per agency.

This is a national security issue if Musk & Co can cut off our govt comms.

"In our testing, we followed a variety of different actors from across the Fediverse, including our ActivityPub-enabled WordPress site. Happily, our articles showed up in the Inbox without a hitch, and clicking on one opened up a clean reader view. This all happens without navigating away from your position in the Inbox or the Timeline."

The return of the blogosphere! This time with no dependence on Goggle.

#blogging #blogosphere#Ghost#WordPress

Just rolled out some fediverse-related improvements:

- Now you can follow Write.as blogs from Ghost! There was a tiny bug with this that we just fixed. (WriteFreely PR: https://writefreely.org/pull/1373)

- We now support the preview property as a fallback for Articles. This will make your posts look much nicer as more platforms support it! (WriteFreely PR: https://writefreely.org/pull/1374)

What can we learn from all this, as we brace for another influx of confused, excitable newbies from Titter? How can we make it a positive experience, both for newbies, and for the old hands (that's probably you by now)?

The most important things IMHO;

1) We're all in this together. Literally. Be excellent to each other.

2) Old hands, don't overwork yourselves. There are millions of us to share the load. Put on your own oxygen mask before helping others.

3) Less is more.

#fediverse

Now that Ghost have opened up their fediverse integration to everyone on their Pro service, we've been getting an influx of people publishing from there into the verse (and the ATmosphere, via BridgyFed). Let's welcome Ghost publishers and give them a positive federated comments experience.

Be prepared. Winter is coming.

Check list for disinformation media warriors...

- Get the hell off #X. If you are still on X, stop here, because you are not really a serious disinformation warrior.
- Get the hell off #Threads, #Instagram and #Facebook.
- Get the hell off #Substack. Good options are #Ghost and #Beehive.
- If you need to be on #Bluesky because all the cool kids are there, at least create an "insurance" #Mastodon account and reflect your thoughts here.
- Create a Mastodon account.
