Coming back to the original topic, can we emulate the decentralisation of ATProto Relays in the field of mass email sending? So self/community-hosted Ghost instances don't need to pay protection money to get emails delivered to subscribers who've opted in to receiving them.

I'm thinking of an automated system where Bob clicks the link in a subscription verification email, and that sends a token to the email host approving mail from the address that will send newsletters.

I'm very disappointed to discover that a self-hosted Ghost can't actually send out newsletters by email.

It provides all the front-end for accepting subscribers and promising them new posts by email, and it's all turned on by default. But to send those emails, you need a paid account with a proprietary mail missile called MailGun.

EDIT: Not really Team Ghost's fault, see below.

I'm so confused by this.

"Make sure you have added the ActivityPub subpaths correctly to your reverse proxy. These must all be proxied to ap.ghost.org over HTTPS."

So a self-hosted Ghost instance can't post directly into the fediverse? If so, that's disappointing.

As is the dependence on MallGun to email out newsletters to subscribers.

In many fediverse apps, only the @handle bit of @index is visible. So we're now awash in accounts called @index, and we have to click to find out which one we're looking at.

I strongly recommend that;

* the default @handle for a Ghost account is @name-of-publication rather than @index

* the controls for turning on ActivityPub show this default handle, and make it easy to change before flipping the switch

Does #Ghost have the ability to add notes to a text, describing the purpose of different sections, formatted in such a way that they're filtered out at publish time? Like the way comments in source code are ignored by compilers. That would be really handy.
