Behind the ballistics of the explosive squirting cucumber https://phys.org/news/2025-07-ballistics-explosive-squirting-cucumber.html

"To reduce direct competition for space and resources between parent and offspring #plants, there is an evolutionary drive for plants to disperse their seeds as far as they possibly can... the #SquirtingCucumber uses high-pressure explosions to eject its #seeds at high speed across large distances... the seeds can achieve speeds up to 46 km/h and reach shooting distances up to 12 m"

@thejapantimes I hope #Japan can produce enough rice, and for people in Japan to live #life compassionately so there’s less fear and more cooperation during times of greater struggle.

#Pesticides can have unforeseen consequences on workers, consumers, and environment.

Three alternatives that I believe could mitigate these issues are sacrificial crops that attract the pest to other #plants, banker plants in conservation strips, and habitat management for other non-insect pest predators.

editing and boosting because seed catalogs are hitting the mailbox:

Because I was still on the mailing list for some reason, let me remind you to NOT BUY from #BakerCreekSeeds because of their blatant support of right wing ideologies and white supremacy.

Better options: High Mowing Seeds, Sow True Seed, Heritage Seed Market, Alliance of Native Seedkeepers, Southern Exposure Seed Exchange, Fedco Seed.

Neighbors Helping Neighbors 🤝🏽

🌵This weekend I propagated a stem cutting from my parent cactus—a gift I received not long ago—and passed it along to a neighbor.

For me, plants are a quiet reminder to stay grounded and keep growing✨

Hang on - whaaat!? "Plants can 'hear' bees buzzing and serve up more nectar when they are nearby, scientists have found. Amazingly, they can tell the difference between a bee’s buzz and that of a non-pollinating insect such as a wasp."

😮 That is AMAZING.
