Live from the Dutch Last Hurrah Before Fireworks Are Banned: Odin is not panicking, but he is sitting quietly on the couch with me seeming a bit put out. The pipes of the building are literally ringing from the amount of nearby concussive blasts. #dog #dogs #dogsofmastodon

Odin definitely wired and screwed this arcade fight stick together all by himself, it didn’t take mommy and daddy six hours at all #dog #dogs #dogsofmastodon

I already know what the best thing about 2026 is going to be, because he just moved into our lives. He's 9 weeks old and is called Darwin.

@TheEddieShow “Bomb cyclone” sounds about right. I just spent 7 hours driving what should have been a 5-hour drive from Illinois through southern Chicago up the west coast of Michigan. All of it heavy rain. Most of it foggy. The delays were where the highways were flooded. But these 2 goofballs were waiting at the end of the drive so all’s well that ends well. 😀 #dogs #DogsOfMastodon

A totally normal pose for a Greyhound... Sugar loves being upside-down, but using the sofa to keep just her back legs in the air while she twists her front half to lie flat is nearly as good. She's an accomplished relaxer.

Now that we’re home, we were able to dig up a provisional leash that surely will last a few days until we can get a heavy-duty one. And I think I’ll institute a policy of replacing it every year for Christmas, because “it’ll last your dog’s whole life” wasn’t measured against Odins
The two days of not being able to use his halter were difficult because he wasn’t getting his usual sensory feedback and wasn’t aware of how much harder he was pulling me around.

Public Transport Odin: very crowded Dutch train filled with foreign children on winter vacation edition
He’s snoozing in the aisle between people’s legs, there’s no room anywhere else. There’s another dog in this cabin shoved under a seat. #dog #dogs #dogsofmastodon #trains #publictransport

(The long read. )
Dogs are amazing.
I know that's something most of us agree on.
Here is Joni, 12 years old, a Border Collie, and the least well behaved dog who's ever lived with us. She is beloved of Zaz who will be devastated when she goes.
One of her more annoying habits is to bark constantly while I'm making supper. Or vacuuming. Or snow is being cleared. Or any time, really.
The other day when she was doing just that. I said to her "stop barking and play the 'hide the blue ball' game." In that game one of us hides her blue ball in the kitchen and she tries (or if she's hidden it, I pretend to try) to find it.
She stopped barking, went straight for the blue ball and 'hid' it in the cupboard, standing in front of it as a clue for me to ask her where it was then to praise her lavishly when she 'found' it, which I did, of course.
I was pretty impressed. Steven was also as he was there. Fluke?
Last night the same barking for nothing was going on, but this time I said in a rather conversational tone (barely over the din) "why don't you stop barking and play hide the blue ball instead?" She stopped and picked up her blue ball and did exactly as I had suggested.
Not a fluke. They know so much more than they let on.
Have a Happy Friday, friends.
