I was cycling to work this morning, stopped at a red light, noticed a dark thing flying, almost got sucked into the engine of a massive truck. But then seconds later it fluttered towards me and landed on my knee... Look at this gorgeous thing!

I don't know much about butterflies, so I looked up this one and it's a male Eastern-tailed Blue Butterfly, a common butterfly species across North America.

1/52 Good to see this Guardian Long Read, but as a historical ecologist I would like to add: humans do not just either stay within boundaries or destroy nature. It's often been a positive, dynamic human-nature symbiosis, with humans actively shaping and creating forests & #biodiversity #historicalecology

An assumption we long had in Earth Sci was that, in the geological past, more diversity meant more life in general. Someone finally got around to checking that, and it works! #Biomass patterns follow the #biodiversity curve.

Small Tortoiseshell butterfly stands on a pink thistle flower foraging nectar. Shot from slightly above and very close providing a lovely view of the wings. A breeze moves the flower away momentarily then the butterfly takes flight.

Today's #MothOfTheDay is a tiny 4mm micromoth (about a grain of rice). Micros are known by their Latin name first, with vernacular as secondary.

LOBESIA RELIQUANA (Wood Marble) A tortrix moth; ergo it spins leaves to create larvae shelters. Hard to photo in focus with 6yr old iPhone because it's so miniscule!

Wow, this is huge.

The last known sighting of a kiwi pukupuku on the mainland was in 1978 but they have survived.
