The snow mostly melted and I finally set up the electronet to get the goats out on new grass! They are extremely happy, even though it's a pretty small area and the grass is quite short still, and it's still not very warm out...
This little goat managed to jump up onto a hay bale, did a little happy dance, and then started panicking when he couldn't figure out how to get down. After thinking about it really hard for a couple of minutes, he jumped down and ran after the other baby goats.
OH: fine, I'll try being less gentle next time. Jeez

@farfalk Datacenters are concentrations of power. Anytime a datacenter is involved, it's a sign of power centralization. The rise of datacenters corresponds with the death of p2p and other visions of a more decentralized internet.

For #Caturday today I am going to talk about Minna, my void cat. 🧵 1/
A few months ago she started acting like she was in serious pain in her hips. She is ten. She has always walked a little knock-kneed but was otherwise fine, until now.
Two vets and four urgent vet visits later we had an actual diagnosis: her hips are completely arthritic, and also one was apparently broken and healed badly when she was a stray (before we got her). Hence, the knock-knees.

Today in Labor History May 16, 1918: Congress passed the Sedition Act against radicals and pacifists, leading to the arrest, imprisonment, execution and deportation of dozens of unionists, anarchists and communists. The law forbade the use of “disloyal, profane, scurrilous, or abusive” language about the U.S. government, its flag, or it military. The mainstream press supported the act, despite the significant limitations it imposed on free speech and of press freedom. In June, 1918, the government arrested Eugene Debs for violating the act by undermining the government’s conscription efforts. He served 18 months in prison. Congress repealed the act in 1920, since world War I had ended. However, Attorney General, A. Mitchell Palmer, lobbied for a peacetime version of it. Additionally, he continued to round up labor activists, communists and anarchist for seditious behavior, particularly Wobblies, or members of the IWW. For example, they convicted Marie Equi for giving a speech at the IWW hall in Portland, Oregon after WWI had ended. Today, President Trump is attempting to bring it back with decrees forbidding criticism of the U.S. government, capitalism, traditional marriage, Israel, and even fascism, while also forbidding speech in support of transgender rights and safety.

@Luanti @homegrown Oh right, well I rely on screen reader feedback so that's a shame its not there yet.
We're actively pursuing grant opportunities so hopefully we'll be able to find one to fund improvements in this area

The UK is as Bri'ish as it gets, but the song just sucks 😂 sorry. It's way too goofy for my taste to take seriously.
That microphone bud looks like a tumor or something.

@scottjenson I mean, even with ethical training I'm not convinced the way LLMs impacts the priors of culture is net positive.
It seems to me it is currently most effectively used to DoS attack, or otherwise mislead, human brains. I think it has accelerated nearly every problem we currently face much more than if has accelerated the solutions.
@theeclecticdyslexic I'm currently reading "More than words" by John Warner, an thoughtful critique of the techbro enthusiasm with LLMs and how writing is a type of thinking, something LLMs just can't do. He makes a compelling point that many of the cultural impacts (e.g. Students using them to write essays) actually points out long standing flaws in our education system. His argument is that it is a wake up call to how we teach writing. LLMs are showing weaknesses in our assumptions. It's still painful, I don't wish to be simplistic, but it's an interesting perspective.
My wife turned on the hair dryer. The kitchen light stayed perfectly steady.
Yes, the electrical system needed to be redone. It cost an arm and a leg, but now I feel safe.
