Today in Labor History February 8, 1943: Lepa Svetozara Radić, a 17-year-old communist, anti-fascist fighter from Bosnia, was executed by the Nazis for shooting at German troops. As they fastened the noose around her neck, they offered her amnesty if she would reveal her comrades' and leaders' names. She responded that she was not a traitor and that they would reveal themselves when they avenged her death. She also cried out: "Long live the Communist Party, and partisans! Fight, people, for your freedom! Do not surrender to the evildoers! I will be killed, but there are those who will avenge me!" Lepa had been a member of the Communist Party since she was 15. Around that same time, her family had been arrested by the Ustaše, a Croatian fascist and ultranationalist organization. Lepa and her sister, Dara, escaped. She then joined the 7th partisan company of the 2nd Krajiški Detachment. She was captured by the Nazis in February, 1943, after using up all of her ammunition, during a fierce gunbattle. She and her comrades continued to fight with their bare hands, until they were overpowered by blows by German rifle butts.

Today in Labor History January 25, 1926: 16,000 textile workers went on strike in Passaic, N.J. The United Front Committee of the Workers (Communist) Party launched the strike. It was the first Communist-led strike in the U.S. At the time, men earned less than $1,200 per year in Passaic mills, while women were lucky to earn $1,000. Yet it cost $1,400 per year to live there. The IWW had attempted to organize the mills in 1912. Most of the workers were immigrants from Eastern and Southern Europe. The United Front appealed to the American Federation of Labor for help. However, the AFL refused, saying they’d have nothing to do with Communists. Elizabeth Gurley Flynn (IWW organizer) and Mary Heaton Vorse both helped support the strikers. In August, 1926, the United Front relinquished control of the strike to the AFL-affiliated United Textile Workers, who eventually settled with the mill owners on March 1, 1927. Vorse was a journalist and novelist who reported on, while simultaneously participating in, many strikes of the era. She also wrote the novel, “Strike!” about the 1929 Gastonia Textile Strike.

Aight so me and two other good folks are starting a tech workers' cooperative. We've got plenty of stuff against us.
None of us have worked in a workers' cooperative or other kind of democratic workplace before.
There are barely a handful workers' coops in Norway. The national umbrella org for coops in Norway is basically dead and doesn't care about workers' coops at all.
Our coop is geographically distributed evenly along Norway, which means our northernmost worker-member would have to drive 24 hours by car or 44 hours by public transport to reach our southernmost worker-member.

We've put in effort to reduce our weaknesses, and we've got things going for us too.
We've met and continue to meet with other workers' coops to learn from them and collaborate. We've got potential clients and pilot projects. We've got hardware. We've got tech and business know-how. We're working on the formal stuff, bylaws and agreements.

It's going great.

Just wanted to let y'all know it can be done.

Armed miners and textile workers, members of the CNT, declared "Libertarian communism," including the abolition of money and property. The revolt quickly spread to other nearby towns. They cut telephone lines and replaced Republican flags with the red and black CNT flags. By January 27, the authorities had quashed the rebellion. They deported hundreds of rebels to African colonies. The detainees included Buenaventura Durruti, who would later lead the Durruti Column of anarchist soldiers against the fascist armies of Francisco Franco.
