Did the final safety sign off on the lathe and the mill at the makerspace. This required doing some test cuts. It's good to be making swarf again finally.
Most people are gone home for the day leaving me with 3 hours left on a 3d print, and a whole makerspace to enjoy. I wonder what I should do with myself now...
If a man was close to the edge, it would be extremely easy to push him over it by breaking or hiding all of his charging leads. I'm losing my mind here. I believe the universe is sentient and hates me.
@TheBreadmonkey This is when the genx desire to keep every cord and charger ever comes in handy. I have a box labeled the cord graveyard.
The one I always remembered (but for a long time had no idea who recorded) was "Words" from Waiting for World War Three. Cant offhand find it online, though, so the assembled oligotudes will have to go unsatisfied.
@zotz yeah the online presence is scattered youtube videos, which i'm playing through
@theruran my point is only that the majority of our vulns are not because of C.
@bagder point taken.
Mastodon admins, if you're looking for a way to find/report accounts affected by the current spam wave, you can run the query below. There may be some false positives, but the results are largely accurate.
Drop into the DB first (sudo -u mastodon psql mastodon_production) and run:
WITH bounds AS (
SELECT ((extract(epoch FROM timestamptz '2026-10-15 00:00:00-04') * 1000)::bigint << 16) AS min_id
),
counts AS (
SELECT m.status_id, COUNT(*) AS mention_count
FROM mentions m, bounds b
WHERE m.status_id >= b.min_id
GROUP BY m.status_id
HAVING COUNT(*) >= 10
)
SELECT s.id,
s.created_at,
a.username || COALESCE('@' || a.domain, '') AS author,
c.mention_count,
COALESCE(s.url, s.uri) AS link
FROM counts c
JOIN statuses s ON s.id = c.status_id
JOIN accounts a ON a.id = s.account_id
WHERE s.deleted_at IS NULL
AND a.suspended_at IS NULL
AND (s.text ILIKE '%google%' OR s.spoiler_text ILIKE '%google%')
ORDER BY s.created_at DESC;
"Procrastination is bad for your health."
"Why?"
"Let me get back to you on that."

Bug turns one of the biggest fears about Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses into reality
The bug is fixed, but privacy concerns remain.
Today in Labor History October 17, 1950: The "Salt of the Earth" zinc mine strike began in Silver City, New Mexico. The strike lasted for 14-months and inspired the film “Salt of the Earth,” which was blacklisted. The film was one of the first to portray a feminist political point of view, particularly through Actress Rosaura Revueltas’s role as Esperanza Quintero. When the Company uses the new Taft-Hartley Act (which also bans General Strikes) to impose an injunction preventing the men from picketing, their wives go walk the picket line in their places. LGBTQ and labor activist Will Geer also played in the film. Writer Michael Wilson, director Herbert Biberman and producer Paul Jarrico had all been blacklisted for their alleged communist ties. Only 13 of the 13,000 theaters in the U.S. showed the film. Geer is most well-known for his role as Grandpa Walton, in the long-running TV series, The Waltons. Because of his activism on labor and political issues, he was blacklisted in Hollywood for many years. In 1934, he became a member of the Communist Party. He also met LGBTQ activist Harry Hay that year and they became lovers. Together, they supported the San Francisco General Strike and demonstrated against fascism and for workers’ rights.

The term "single use software" currently lives rent free in my head.
People use LLMs to create software specific for their needs. But neither can other people use it (hardcoded variables, no rights management, too specific), nor do they use it again (too specific, easier to produce a new one).
Single use software is not maintained. Nobody understands it or has an interest in keeping it working.
The creation of single use software feels cheap, but isn't. It takes time to create the software, it needs infrastructure and power. The time is experienced as short compared to how long it takes to create maintainable and reusable software. But once you take into account how many people benefit from reusable software, the single use software takes way more time to create than what it saves. The infrastructure and power costs are hidden because the data center isn't visible. The costs are subsidized by venture capital.
Like other single use items, single use software brings risks of unforeseen consequences. From data loss or leaks to issues for maintainers of reusable software (eg. verbal abuse, less motivation and lost income).
As an example of single use software is a German LinkedIn post of a person who slopcoded a HEMS (home energy management system). It took them more than a week. While open source projects like https://evcc.io/ already provide the same functionality. They could have used it for free or paid 100€ and got support for some additional devices. But they decided that they know better how it should work and now have a single use software. If it breaks there is nobody they can ask. There won't be updates and no community to discuss and develop new features. No organization will ever be interested in officially supporting it. And even if it works, it only benefits that one person.
(This doesn't mean people shouldn't build things that only they use. But they should enjoy doing so.)
I would separate three things: actual single use software (not a new concept, a lot of scripts are basically that), software only for one person's need/use, and then whatever vibe/cuck coders do. A lot of generated stuff is "single use" only because they have to replace it fully when it fails. 1 and 2, on the other hand, are a different story.
(And pray to your gods or some other person's gods when LLMs start concepts for architecture and security, given the data they were trained on.)
My husband ordered a handmade arcade controller from a mysterious man named Alpenmeister who does in fact live in the Alps and who is known to always take several months longer than anticipated to hew each circuit board from primordial Alpine silicon, but every serious button-presser simply Must have one
@leni Good point on fit.
the big men of FOSS told you that you were no good at organizing, at the messy legal bits, at licensing, at the social bits. they demanded fealty and money because they were the organizers. how could you hope to come up with a (laughably weak) document like the GPL? with 1000 variants of the BSD license? how could you get money and housing for giving (frankly universally terrible) talks for your knowledge? you were told that the only thing you were good for was your technical skill, and someone else would worry about the rest.
none of those big men are special. all of us are organizers. all of us can do what we will with our labor. all of us have proven to be better at both organizing and technical labor than any of the big men. they keep proving it every day.
why do we have to follow their marching orders? why do we have to act like switching operating systems is resistance?
be impolite. be a fucking nightmare. they owe us for everything they are now.
I left this printing the other day when I went home. A simple soldering iron stand for my usb-c soldering iron. The design has a couple of voids in the bottom that are designed to be filled with 12mm ball bearings to provide mass. I don't have any ball bearings the right size. I do however have some 12mm precision ground 1.2510 high carbon tool steel. Which works perfectly.
Not a lot of effort needed. But it pushes another project over the finish line.
Citing concerns about misinformation and hate, @ScottishGreens have (Finally!) made the decision to leave X for good.
They cited Mastodon as one of the 8 platforms they can still be found on but I hope this can result in more engagement on the fediverse. https://uk.news.yahoo.com/scottish-greens-quit-x-over-125527731.html #scotpol #scotland #uk #ukpol #politics #greens
This is a Hot Take™, and there is a lot of possible nuance here. But the way things are written, it seems to me kinda sorta possible to create fedi instances that would not be required to do age verification at all.
Obviously, we should not comply in advance with this BS at all. Instead, we should push back against EU Kids Act.
But it is genuinely interesting to me to see how fedi could maybe avoid being caught in largely by many things that are already available or obvious on fedi.
@rysiek "tm" doesn't work if you don't use it with a single word and don't hashtag it, sorry.
@amoroso @Kroc When I was on mastodon.social I got so much HOA abuse from randos scanning the local timeline looking to pick fights*. I moved to oldbytes.space and that immediately stopped. And the local time was _interesting_, filled with people's projects, history, and just neat stuff they were interested in. You could actually make friends on the local feed, not just attract new random enemies.
Scale brings efficiencies as well as new problems. If you're the one that has to deal with the problems, maybe unbounded growth shouldn't be a goal, rather reaching a balance where you enjoy the advantages without dealing with a lot of BS.
(*) To be clear, it paled in comparison to what most non-white, non-presenting-as-male people got/get on Mastodon. Still, the local timeline on msstodon.social was the main source of abuse.
you know, I was hoping I already made this clear
netbsd taking money from a relatively unknown fascist group doesn’t damn them. they likely didn’t know who FUTO was. most people don’t.
if it runs ok on your hardware (and that’s a big “if”), netbsd is likely a more stable choice than any Linux 7.x+ kernel will ever be, and you should switch over if you can.
switching to netbsd isn’t resistance. please be real.
you already crawled up onto your cross and nailed your hands to an OS that was 10-20 years behind the curve on hardware back when you were the only linux user you knew, remember? muddling through broken shit is the easy way out, you’ve done it before. how did it end? a bunch of assholes took over. why would it end any different this time?
resistance isn’t politely choosing another OS. resistance isn’t a technical solution to a social problem.
the netbsd team aren’t your friends. there’s perhaps a future where they could be, but right now the ending will be no different.

Sorry, the app encountered an unexpected error
