Fedi admins: what are you planning to do about the Online Safety Act from the UK government?
If your instance is hosted elsewhere but with users, visitors or federating servers in the UK, what are you intending to do about it?
Geoblock the UK?

i wrote a guide to installing, configuring, and running a single-user @Mastodon server. it sets up a @hetzner VPS on ubuntu linux, but the instructions are general enough.
highlights: local disk storage, subdomain redirect, improved configuration files, security and performance, privacy and safety considerations. this server was created by following the guide. hello fediverse. ⁂

Frage an die #mastoadmin:
Ist es heutzutage noch nötig bzw. sinnvoll, Relays in den Mastodon-Servern zu konfigurieren?
Welchen Mehrwert bringen die noch?
Listodon.com has been updated to 4.4.3 (my test instance). I had installed some custom themes and those have been giving me a headache, but I think I have the process figured out again so that future updates aren't so bad.
We just released Mastodon 4.4.3, 4.3.11, and 4.2.24.
These versions contain bugfixes, and a fix for a security issue if you use SAML. In 4.4.3 there are also changes to how quote posts are handled, as we continue to work towards full support for quote posts in the next main release.
Full release notes and update instructions are available on the GitHub releases page. #mastoadmin
This upgrade includes the latest today's daily build, so everything should be as up to date as possible.
As always, if you notice anything unusual or buggy, please let me or any of the other admins know.
Enjoy your time here! Feel free to message me if you have any questions or thoughts.

As a self-hosting Mastodon instance, with just a couple user accounts, I wished there was a "preview card" creating mode that recognized when any user was viewing a timeline, whether home, a list, federated, etc, and ONLY created link previews when that was occurring. Also, if it is not already done, wished it would save link data in the database for previews created and when any user shared that link in a new post, reply, etc, it would search the database for the preview image and data without doing it again. I'm not sure if Mastodon already does this or not.
I'm getting gigabytes of images and making untold server calls to other websites for content my instance will never see yet it retains it.

Merged the performance fixes introduced 31 minutes ago in Mastodon core. This should hopefully fix the lag some users experienced, along with the janky scrolling issue. Details here: https://github.com/ronilaukkarinen/mastodon-bird-ui/issues/168#issuecomment-3151833140

Lately this instance has been more and more expensive to maintain (db/files only grow), Patreon income hasn't kept up, and my personal enjoyment of it has gone down (uspol doesn't help one bit). I really don't want to just kill it, but I'm not sure what options I have.
Ideas:
A. well, kill it completely 🔫
B. enable the thing where semi-old posts gets nuked regularly (not a permanent solution)
C. transfer to someone else to own and host it
New scam is surfacing on Bluesky, which means it will arrive here soon.
It works by telling you they have information about someone impersonating you, but for thin bogus reasons, you need to contact them on Discord. This is a scam.
