There is a remarkable degree of polarisation in current debate about the capacities of Large Language Models (LLMs). One example of this is the debate about reasoning. Some researchers see ample evidence of reasoning in these systems, while others maintain that these systems do not reason at all. This paper seeks to shed light on this debate by examining the divergent uses of the term reasoning across different disciplines. It provides a simple clarificatory framework for talking about behaviour that highlights key dimensions of variation in how ‘reasoning’ is used across psychology, philosophy and AI. This highlights not just the extent to which researchers are talking past each other, but also that common inferences about model capability that accompany classification decisions are, in fact, far less compelling than they might seem.

I fixed x86 tail calls in LLVM

Tail calls passing structs had been broken since forever, and it made me mad enough to write C++.

It's a little tricky because sometimes it requires shuffling values around on the stack and you have to make sure to not overwrite values you'll need later. This was fixed in the arm backend a while ago, and I was able to port that approach to the x86 backend. The plan is to include this in LLVM 22.

Together with some other changes it seems like guaranteed tail calls in rust might actually, finally happen.

LogTape 2.0.0 released!

LogTape is a zero-dependency logging library for JavaScript/TypeScript that works across Deno, Node.js, Bun, and browsers.

What's new in 2.0.0:

• lazy() for dynamic context: with() now supports values that are evaluated at logging time, not when the logger is created. Child loggers inherit the lazy wrapper, so they always see the current value.
• Configuration from files: New @logtape/config package lets you load logging configuration from JSON, YAML, or TOML instead of writing TypeScript code.
• Better error logging: Pass Error objects directly to logger.error(err) instead of wrapping them in properties.
• Async lazy evaluation: Logging methods now accept async callbacks for expensive async operations.
• isEnabledFor() method: Check if a log level is enabled before running expensive computations.
• Time-based log rotation: Rotate logs daily, hourly, or weekly with automatic cleanup of old files.
• New integrations: Elysia framework support and log4js adaptor.
