I can't speak to whether or not #typst is capable of replacing #LaTeX.
That said, it's a pretty neat tool. After poking at the (excellent) documentation and walking through the tutorial, I was able to start building good looking documents without any hand holding.
My use case is "using archaic tools like #groff to avoid fighting with gui/web word processors". If yours is similar, you'll likely enjoy playing with it.
@RussSharek Looks interesting, didn't know about #Typst - thanks for sharing!
Have just had a quick look at it so far. If I understand it correctly, you need a special (web) app to write things in Typst. If this is true, that would probably be a no-go for me (it is a critical feature for me to be able to use my preferred editor); will nevertheless have a closer look at it.
I usually use #LaTeX in case the required formatting is complex (and in particular for documents requiring a lot of mathematical typesetting - though this happens very rarely these days) and #Asciidoc in simpler cases (which happen to be the usual cases).

Hello,
#question #aide #these #latex #xelatex #redaction#shs
Merci !!

I've made a poster for #AMLaP2025 (academic conference) using #LaTeX#Beamer. My first poster in quite some time. I chose Beamer because I wanted the design part to be as painless as possible and focus on content. I think the result looks pretty decent. What do you think? And what's your preferred way to make posters?

Here I tend to read a lot of negative comments about #LLMs, but does anyone share my experience? I use them as an aid to mostly write #rstats and #LaTeX #tikz code faster or recently to clean up a very messy #emacs configuration file. They may hallucinate and I always need to double check the output, but I find #LLMs extremely useful. The ecological footprint is a discussion for another day.

I've just finished reading this blog post regarding the markdown Syntax by RL Dane
He is also given a brief history of the Computing Hardware and software that he has used ever since he was a little Padawan.
The blog post is just a few minutes to read and you shall learn something good from it.
TLDR is; use {smackdown} markdown for everything you write that needs formatting and be truly platform independent in your formatted text creation.
When you truly understand what he means, it is literal total freedom with formatted text and you don't even need to learn tex or LaTeX, since you will not be writing a book.
When you do that you will have to read my posts regarding tex and LaTeX, and those are blog posts I haven't released.
For me markdown has been important, ever since I was working on waffle bulletin boards many many decades ago
Bold underline /italic/ was the syntax that we used back then.
Our waffle bulletin board had a special text formatting routine which Made these codes look like they were actually bold underline and italic when we were viewing those emails.
On the #AmIRC channel on Dalnet we also had a formatting routines for our clients, mine was AmIRC that converted these codes in a similar fashion.
So in true Essence markdown has been with us for a very very long time; we just didn't call it markdown then but we made sure that our text formatting had nothing to do with the computer platform we happen to be typing on.
