Anyone built the fair mouse @info_1 offers as a kit and had it work? Mine processes clicks left and right, sort of anyway. But moving the mouse makes the pointer "wiggle a bit" and that's about it, there's no actual "movement" as in a certain direction. Now I *did* have a lot of problems soldering the USB wires to the PCB but I am pretty sure I got that cleaned up properly. Only "short" I measured was between ground and shielding and APPARENTLY that's standard? Maybe not? Anything else I could have messed up? I did notice a small tab on the bottom of the sensor but the instructions didn't talk about it. Was I supposed to remove that? Was that some kind of "lens protector" that makes it so the sensor is not doing its job now? Anyone else got any helpful hints what to look at? #nagerit #fairmouse #fairit #fairityourself #soldering #noob

I think my cheapo #soldering iron is due for a replacement. I use it once or twice a year for beginner-friendly #electronics mods and repairs, nothing too wild.
Reviews and prices for these things are all over the place. Anyone have a recommendation?
Edit: Seems like the pinecil is the winner!

This question might sound silly for a lot of people who work with #electronics every day… but the centre pin in these barrel plugs always is the positive contact, right?
Don't have the power supply for this OptiPlex 5050, I do have a fitting 65W USB-C PD adapter board though and want to use that instead. I'm just… decently scared of screwing up something since I can't test it with the original power adapter beforehand.

Hosting an overdrive pedal soldering workshop next Sunday, August 30, at Pedal Markt in Berlin Neukölln.

The pedal is a color and texture device. With different clipping and brightness options it can act as a boost, an overdrive or a distortion. It stacks well with other pedals, responds to your playing and is a classy beast all around!

I finished up teaching 2 week neon and STEM class at Urbanglass on Friday. The high schoolers were from all over NYC with varied backgrounds/ schooling and they all made such fun things!
Along with my two TAs (Caroline and MolMol) we taught them not only how to wire and bend neon tubes, but also how to solder (SMT and through hole) and the very basics on programming captive portal ESP32 chips for blinking neon with phones.
We played games, Including making a 30 foot mega straw for fruit punch, competing with three glass an food coloring "rollercoasters" as well as numerous "drop test" contests to test/ build bend/ weld strength.
Overall they learned about planning, pereeverance and some the hard lessons of loss that glass can teach so well when the thing you make breaks.
One student quoted Don Quixote "Without hardships there can be no Adventure!" - couldn't have said it better myself :)

Do you really need the missing serial console for remote out-of-band managemnt, like most of their devices?
Well, I had one and then returned it for that reason. I've been considering it again, but not without the serial connection... so a little digging around and I found some PCB images and quick info on the OpenWRT site.
Then decided to add those bits to a fork for personal tracking... for those interested in the PCB photos and quick-doc:

Clearly still a WIP, and would need to re-purchase the device to test it out... so perhaps in the next few months that will happen.
