Ayer se averió un tren en Pueyo, cosas de la catenaria de esas que cuenta @brucknerite. A 40 grados.

A friend noticed that one of the Senators questioning Marconi was Duncan U. Fletcher, and pointed me to his English Wikipedia bio https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duncan_U._Fletcher .

Which noted that he was "a staunch supporter of the Confederate cause" in the 20th century -- but also that, in the 1890s, was one of three attorneys, all white, appointed to administer the bar examination to James Weldon Johnson, who was the first African-American admitted to the Florida Bar by examination. Huh.

When I came across that claim, it had no citation, and I was pretty doubtful. I used WikiBlame https://wikipedia.ramselehof.de/wikiblame.php?user_lang=en&lang=en&project=wikipedia&tld=org&article=Duncan+U.+Fletcher&needle=weldon&skipversions=0&ignorefirst=0&limit=500&offmon=8&offtag=15&offjahr=2025&searchmethod=int&order=desc&user= and saw that a user had added this in 2007 along with many other no-citation claims.

So I started learning more about Fletcher and about Johnson, and editing the articles about them as I went.

And in other #OnlineSafetyAct news, Ofcom has today issued 4chan with a provisional notice of contravention:

> Provisional Decision: Information Notice duties

> In accordance with section 130 of the Online Safety Act 2023, we have today issued 4chan Community Support LLC with a provisional notice of contravention.

> Ofcom is satisfied that there are reasonable grounds for believing the provider has contravened its duties under section 102(8) of the Act to comply with two requests for information. We will consider any representations provided in response to this provisional notice before we make a final decision on this matter.

@neil
I really dont see why 4chan would give a flying fuck about what Ofcom want

Just because the UK always grovels to the US, doesnt mean that will be reciprocated

Not to defend 4chan (never used it, never will) but if the net result of this stupidity is that #wikipedia becomes unavailable in the UK while 4chan just carries on regardless ...WTAF

The UK Parliament can't ignore the growing public discontent with the Online Safety Act.

They must do more to protect freedom of expression from the vast and unwieldy provisions that are particularly impacting small sites and services.

The challenge to the UK Online Safety Act by @wikimediafoundation has been dismissed.

BUT there's still some good news for freedom of expression.

The High Court recognised that platforms have a public interest, not just commercial entities. It's clear that Ofcom must be flexible to protect this valuable resource, as well as small websites that can't bear the regulatory burden.

The UK may be about to lose access to Wikipedia as they've lost their High Court Challenge to OSA.

You can download Wikipedia by installing the @kiwix app https://kiwix.org/en/applications/

Then use https://library.kiwix.org/ to find Wikipedia, or any other interesting book. It will download a file (Wikipedia is 110gb) that you can then open in the Kiwix browser

@bkuhn @dos @dpk I think copyleft with source-requirement is good, though I'm not convinced it's viable for all places where CC BY-SA is useful for. For example, distributing raw film footage and editing files for some videos isn't really necessary and may be an unnecessary burden if you think about much of the video content out there today, so having a weaker version of "copyleft" is sensible to me. I would be fine with a different term for it though.

In the case of #Wikipedia, though, printed copies should always offer &/or be accompanied with electronic copies. Wikipedia should really be under copyleft and it's not.

After all, paper printout is but a rudimentary form of DRM.

I'm not saying CC-BY-SA is useless and shouldn't exist, I'm saying there is no #copyleft in the CC license group. CC even used to encourage photographers license scaled versions CC-BY-SA & keep high quality images proprietary.
