Interesting, Nature, a leading science journal, has a policy on the use of AI:
"Artists, filmmakers, illustrators and photographers whom we commission and work with will be asked to confirm that none of the work they submit has been generated or augmented using generative AI."
It sounds like if one wants to be published in Nature, one must dump Adobe products and go with open source, such as: Darktable, Inkscape, GIMP, &c.
Nice!
The QWERTY keyboard was designed to reduce mechanical jamming in early typewriters.
We kept it for computers. Which don't jam.
How many of our systems are just preserved solutions to problems that no longer exist?
And how would we even know?
@Daojoan Can I ask you a question?
@codinghorror 100% legitimate call-out, and I was never challenging that point. Merely that 'pick poison or off-grid' is a false dichotomy. Not all technology is metaphorical poison—and 'off-grid' has its own technology needs in almost-2026.
I mean shit, I've spent the last decade trying to settle on Proxmox or bhyve while the now-outdated hardware gathers dust (that it can't even serve everything I currently rely on other people's servers for notwithstanding). Not sure if 'de-clouding' is even a reasonable pursuit anymore.
@nicholasburns it's not. Pick your poison.
Small announcement: I received a $3k grant from Bluesky to support the development of the ATProto tools & services I'm building ☺️ I mention this here at the end: https://lab.mackuba.eu/3m6iaax3it225
It looks like several other people got them too, including:
- Bailey who built the PDS Moover
- Mary who made the atcute JS SDK
- Phil who built the Microcosm/Constellation services
- authors of RedDwarf client which loads data from the PDS skipping the AppView
- and the slices.network service
And also anew.social, the creators of Bridgy Fed
"Good news, sir," said OpenAI's General Counsel, "I've solved the problem with all of those teenagers killing themselves after using our product." (probably)

@arstechnica brace yourself for even crappier printers due to AI-developed firmware.
@jackwilliambell @j2bryson @feorag @kdgregory Yeah, they do that in Edinburgh ... but the mulled wine is about 5x the price it is in any German market (and not as good, either)

8/n Government, on the other hand, chooses to spend less per student.
Every “Full Time Equivalent" domestic student is receiving about $2000 less support now from the government than at the peak in 2009.
Meanwhile, domestic tuition has nearly doubled from about $5000 (in 2025 dollars) in 1995 when I graduated high school, to $9000 today.
Has what students earn at their first job doubled? How about residence or a basement suite?
Hello Mastodon Family! Lena here from marketing. I'm writing an article on instant messengers with interoperability and I'm looking for some more information on what actually makes a messenger interoperable. I thought of focusing on: Element, Delta, and SimpleX but I'm open to other suggestions! Could anyone kindly advise? ☺️

1/n Yesterday on @chris I commented (https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/@chris/115612771113881465) about the #PostSecondary review announced by the #BCNDP.
Today, on #socialBC I want to do a summary thread on this 145 page “State of Post Secondary in Canada 2025”.

I am grossed out by its AI fanboying -- a statement on the "state" of education in itself -- but the data is good... so... onward.

Oh really? "they/them" pronouns are woke? Did you know "they/them" comes from Old Norse, whereas "he/she" come from old English? They/them are the pronouns of Vikings.
Would you call Sweyn Forkbeard "woke"? And Eric Bloodaxe? Woke too? And I suppose even Ivar the Boneless was woke. Get real.
As an aside, the Vikings were literally so cool. Absolutely no shame in naming themselves things like that. The Anglo Saxon kings were naming themselves things like "Edward the Martyr", it's no wonder they lost to guys calling themselves "The Boneless".
Serious question! Our apartment complex's pool is heated, but it's still pretty cold when you get out of the pool. I was contemplating buying bathrobes with the hope that we'd use the pool more, but Kev says that might make us look like swingers. Is that true?
@Alice I think one follow-up here is: Is it a bad thing to look like swingers?
"Let me get this straight. Your lab has bred a dragon?"
"A wyvern, director. It has two legs, two wings, whereas a-"
"Which flies, breathes fire, and is intelligent?"
"About as intelligent as a border collie."
"So, intelligent. Why?"
"You asked us to invent measures to take down small drones."
@MicroSFF hell yeah!
