If your employer gave you €1000 (or $1000) to spend on open source projects that support your work, where would this money go and why?
My employer gave me that money and it went mainly to #miniDebConf #Berlin and to multiple #XMPP sprints.
Fortunately, getting killed by the CIA by means of predator drone strike is not everybody's threat model. For others - certain French judges for example - a real threat can be getting sanctioned by the US government and completely locked out of US services.
So yes, know your threat model when picking between #Signal and #Conversations_im.
If getting killed by means of a #predatorDrone strike were among my realistic #threatModels, I'ld avoid owning a #SIM card in the first place. Which is one of the prerequisites for a Signal account. #Jabber ftw.

Anyone recommending a decentralised alternative to Signal and not including any discussion of anonymity sets, metadata leakage, and so on, is just telling me that they have absolutely zero idea of how security and privacy work.
XMPP (and I say this as someone who was involved in standardising it back in the day and wrote two client implementations) is not fit for purpose for a modern threat models. It leaks metadata like a sieve to passive adversaries.
The Fediverse is a fundamentally different problem because it's about public communication and does not aim to provide privacy. A tool for private communication is a completely different problem space.

Like wise any discussions of Signal without taking into account centralization issues, hierarchical structures (non profits), non community development, enshitification as @contrapunctus said and including cryptocurrency scams into the app is not giving the full picture either is there?
We need to give threat models and balance the needs of each person as it was mentioned. Generalized statements dont work and at worse make people saying them appear misinformed (xmpp, signal or otherwise)

Y’all, using #Signal is a Bad Idea™, all because it is a centralized platform. Centralized platforms are
- vulnerable to changes in policies and management (see Twitter/X, Tumblr, Reddit, YouTube, …)
- vulnerable to downtime (see #Cloudflare and #AWS outages making large parts of the Internet inaccessible)
- at greater threat of backdoors, DDoS, and government pressure, since there’s much more to be gained than targeting smaller servers on federated networks
You’re using a federated social network, the Fediverse. Similarly, I use a federated platform as my primary means of chat and AV calls, and recommend you all do the same too. It’s called #Jabber a.k.a. #XMPP.
The easiest way to start using it is to install Quicksy (Play Store, App Store, F-Droid) or Prāv (Play Store, F-Droid). They use your phone number for registration and contact discovery, similar to Signal, Telegram, and WhatsApp.
You also have many apps and servers which do not need a phone number - see my quick and easy user’s guide to XMPP to learn more.
And, as with anything I recommend, they are #FreedomRespecting software a.k.a. #libre software (sometimes mistakenly called #OpenSource or #FOSS) - the only kind of software that is trustworthy and resistant to monopolies.
PS I don’t know who needs to hear this, but please do better than just following the herd and installing whatever the people in your circle did. That’s how every abusive centralized big tech platform gets its power.

btw however niche, it would be nice if we had #movim support too (@movim@piaille.fr). but that is #xmpp based, which would require a #jabber server, which wouldn't be that bad for users, but afaik there are no messaging bridges/gateways for #atproto and #activitypub. only #bluesky on #matrix. but #xmpp-#matrix exists.

Day 2 of the Hackathon went great. Marvin ( @larma) helped me implement an opt-in feature in #Conversations_im which routes all P2P sessions (calls and files transfers) via the users home server (similar to the feature found in Signal).
I went on a nice walk to a viewpoint on Mount Royal afterwards.
Now looking forward to Day 1 of #IETF124.
