Since I wrote this, many have introduced me to movim, and it's pretty slick! I'm still experimenting, but I like a lot of what I see. Still missing moderation tools for groups, though.

Other (interoperable!) XMPP clients, such as Cheogram, allow for moderation of individual messages in groups, though the disappeared messages may not disappear from all clients that have already received them.

Estic provant l'aplicació #Monal ( #xmpp) per a #iOS en la seva versió 6.4.17 (1072) perquè els seus programadors l'han millorat molt des de la darrera vegada que la vaig fer anar.
Per a provar-la a fons he instal·lat un servidor #ejabberd versió 26.1.0 en el meu domini personal spla.cat. Efectivament, Monal ha millorat moltíssim, funcionen perfectament les notificacions, OMEMO activat i configurat automàticament i per defecte etc. Molt bé tot. 👏🏼✅

Just note that "Direct Messaging apps" are way more complex than you might realize and that #XMPP has solved most of the problems you might encounter.
We engage with decentralization protocols a lot (many nerds love to) but make no mistake: in the end, the app needs to work and be easy to use. #deltachat is a cross-platform FOSS offering, with guaranteed security levels, close to user expectations ... major factors in driving adoption!
True, the email system is not necessarily better than #xmpp ... but please compare with http://chatmail.at which is fast, ephemeral and secure, with delta inherently being a peer-to-peer E2EE messenger :)
What I love about #Conversations_im as a #UnifiedPush distributor—aside from #XMPP being a reliable, secure, and efficient protocol—is that it comes with a healthy dose of decentralization.
Sure, you can technically self-host a Sunup instance, but will you? XMPP already offers thousands of providers out of the box.
Imagine sharing a link to your fediverse account to someone not on the fediverse, hoping they follow you.
Now imagine instead that the link you share takes them to a beautiful yet simple landing page that carefully guides them to the ideal platform, geographically closest, and helps them through the onboarding process, recommends the best desktop/mobile client and then follows you from their new account.
Stop dreaming. I'm building this. Wanna help?

There are IM apps mostly pushed by a few loud enthusiasts on Mastodon, and then there is #XMPP, which is used in the real world.
For example:
• Evacuating people from battlefields in Afghanistan: That’s XMPP.
• Shipping metric fuck tons of cocaine across the globe: That’s XMPP.
I've been playing around with #XMPP, so I set up a group chat where XMPP and fediverse nerds can live chat the #Superbowl on Sunday.
If you've been thinking about trying XMPP this might be your excuse. If you couldn't care less about the Superbowl, I get that too. (I may have a conflict, myself.)

No action required for Prosody operators. Operators of servers running ejabberd need to make sure they are running version 25.08 or later.

Unfortunately spam and abuse - like anywhere on the Internet - can be a problem in public channels on the Jabber/XMPP network.
That's why the next version of #Conversations_im is combining ban and message deletion (moderation) into one step.
Let's hope you won't need that functionality very often.
so it's 2026, and remembering to manually set up message retention for multiple devices is something I should *definitely* have to think about when using an E2EE chat application. #XMPP
