Hello Mastodon Family! Lena here from marketing. I'm writing an article on instant messengers with interoperability and I'm looking for some more information on what actually makes a messenger interoperable. I thought of focusing on: Element, Delta, and SimpleX but I'm open to other suggestions! Could anyone kindly advise? ☺️

#Interoperability? Then look at #RFC6120!

@datum Mastodon is distributed at the level of the protocol, not infrastructure. Sure, some people use a server in their closet, but most license hyperscaler infra to host their mastodon instance.

Meta note, we seem to be dealing with a confusion in what the term "distributed" means in this context.

@Mer__edith @datum

Somebody please #timewarp me to 1999-01-06 and invent an #IETF #standard #protocol for federated #instantMessaging 🙂

Btw. my local internet club, founded in 1995, does host both #Jabber and Matrix now. No #hyperscaler involved. No #selfHosting needed.
