Probably the best bet for a nationwide news source that can be trusted is PBS and NPR. Probably its everyone's duty to strongly support them and ProPublica.

Who knew Uruguay completely ended fossils fuels. 98% renewables, economy restored, employment up, energy costs plummeted, stability of supply, economy growing.

"You know how right now, while the government is shut down and food stamps for millions of Americans are set to expire one week from now, Trump is tearing down the East Wing of the White House to build himself a privately funded ballroom? Some of the companies who are funding Trump’s ballroom include: Amazon, Apple, Coinbase, Google, Meta, and Microsoft.

This talk mostly isn’t about reactionary tech billionaires and their complicit companies. Instead, it’s about attacks that we should be prepared for during this Age of Technofascism, and ways we can defend against them.

In this talk, I’m going to try to give some specific, actionable advise about three three topics: mercenary spyware, device searches, and app censorship.

But don’t think of this as a checklist that all you have to do is finish and then you’re good. Ultimately, what we all need to do, is build an intentional and forgiving security culture. These are things to talk over with your friends, colleagues, and family members as shared practices.

Fascists are targeting everyone outside their in-group. If we want to keep our communities safe, our defenses need to be collective, not individual."

"If the Supreme Court doesn’t reverse a lower court’s ruling, internet service providers (ISPs) could be forced to terminate people’s internet access based on nothing more than mere accusations of copyright infringement. This would threaten innocent users who rely on broadband for essential aspects of daily life. EFF—along with the American Library Association, the Association of Research Libraries, and Re:Create—filed an amicus brief urging the Court to reverse the decision.

The Stakes: Turning ISPs into Copyright Police
Among other things, the Supreme Court approving the appeals court’s findings will radically change the amount of risk your ISP takes on if a customer infringes on copyright, forcing the ISP to terminate access to the internet for those users accused of copyright infringement—and everyone else who uses that internet connection."

#RationalWiki has been saved from the brink of collapse from a series of frivolous #SLAPP lawsuits. We came out of this with an out-of-court settlement requiring removal of about 60 web pages, and a reincorporation from New Mexico (weak anti-SLAPP laws) to Oregon (strong anti-SLAPP laws). Moving forward, we are looking to replace two board members who helped get us through this difficult period.

"This latest move follows Martin’s established pattern of constitutional violations, including investigating protected speech by Congress members, attacking the Associated Press, and probing medical journals over their editorial policies.

But his attack on Wikipedia represents something even more dangerous: a federal prosecutor attempting to control how the internet’s largest collaborative knowledge platform manages its content.

The way this works is pretty straightforward: First, you find some pretext to investigate. Then you write a threatening letter. Then you leak that letter to a friendly media outlet. In this case, Martin sent his letter to The Free Press, a publication that has spent years warning about government censorship — at least when they pretend Democrats do it.
(...)
There’s more in there, including complaints about how AI tools train on Wikipedia, suggesting (ridiculously) that this might implicate Wikipedia if “foreign actors” are able to “launder information” into AI systems. And the letter threatens to revoke Wikpedia’s non-profit status (something the IRS would normally investigate, not the US Attorney for DC).

There are also demands to know details about Wikpedia’s editorial processes and how it handles trust & safety. Just imagine the freakout that would occur (probably led by The Free Press) if a US Attorney during the Biden admin had demanded to know Fox News’ editorial policies and standards and practices, while claiming that they were letting too much propaganda online. The screaming would never stop.

Indeed, what Martin is doing here represents exactly the kind of government interference in editorial decisions that free speech advocates have been warning about. But where are those voices now?"

Government Actually Threatens Wikipedia’s Editorial Freedom; Self-Proclaimed Free Speech Warriors Suddenly Have Other Plans

When Trump officials want to censor speech, they don’t quite say “we want to censor speech” (after all, they pretend to be the party that “brought free speech back.”) Instead, the…
