The Corporation for Public Broadcasting’s board of directors voted to dissolve the organization, officials announced Monday night, ending the 58-year-old agency that distributed federal funds to #NPR, #PBS and more than 1,500 local public radio and television stations.

This formalizes the shutdown after Republicans in Congress rescinded $1.1 billion in funding because of Trump’s tantrum demand.

Created by Congress through the Public Broadcasting Act of 1967, #CPB served as a middleman between taxpayers and public media, distributing most of its appropriations directly to local stations. The funding was particularly crucial for small and rural stations, especially those in areas where internet isn’t. Most of them will be forced to close.

I just learned that Stewart Cheifet passed away only a few days ago on December 28th, 2025. For those unfamiliar with him, he was the creator and host of The Computer Chronicles in the 80s and 90s and over 400 episodes.

It’s fascinating to go back and watch old episodes. This isn’t just a time capsule of retro-computing, they actually aired informative, highly technical, computer-oriented television on PBS like this episode from 1985 on UNIX.

watching a #PBS American Masters special about Brenda Lee and am now OBSESSED. am blown away that so many classic rock ’n roll songs and #music ―that i don’t even think of because they’re somehow always playing in the background― were recorded and made smash hits by her. i now NEEEEEEEED a compilation of all her music.
