Pornhub says UK visitors down 77% since age checks came in / @BBCNews
I thought my YT client was glitching because a lot of videos just disappeared.
I thought my YT client was glitching because a lot of videos just disappeared.
It turns out those videos were indeed hidden due to the latest changes in the ToS.
Creators when hearing the news decided to just hide most of their content rather than going through one by one to get them clear.
The #Discord breach is yet another example of why no online service should ever be required or even permitted to accept uploaded ID images. If it's necessary to verify ID, or at least age, either do it on device or through an in-person service, or cease operating in the jurisdiction till that necessity ends.
Every one of these services is a data breach waiting to happen, and once the identity documents are breached, as well as being means to identity theft, they can be used for impersonation on every other service requiring uploaded ID. And the ability to re-use the uploaded ID proves the futility of that form of verification anyway.
Just like biometrics, visual verification of ID cards only has security value when done in-person. All the requirements of ID image uploading are just security theatre, which shift liability from the service to the user while magnifying the harm to which they're exposed.

The limit does not exist when it comes to the UK Online Safety Act.
Ofcom is pushing at the edges of this law to age-gate livestreaming. This will prevent young content creators from engaging with audiences and put a lid on self-expression.

Ofcom is flexing its powers in the UK Online Safety Act to impose age verification on anyone who livestreams.
That means locking down accounts of under-18s and forcing everyone else to submit to privacy intrusive age checks.
We can't allow the Online Safety Act to ransom your privacy for free speech.

If every country starts requiring that people provide official ID in order to "verify their age" to use social media, there will be no way to use any social media without associating the account with a legal identity.
This is horrible for democracy,
and should terrify everyone.
It doesn't matter if platforms use third-parties or not. It doesn't matter if they use some special encrypted code, the result is the same. This gatekeeps open discussions and government criticisms free from reprisals.
This is bad.
This is China "free-speech" bad.

"Daily occurrences of data breach incidents have taught us we cannot trust these services to safeguard our data. Data breaches for this sensitive information are only a matter of time.
The concentration of such valuable data will likely be monetized and resold either by the platforms themselves, by the for-profit third-party "age assurance" providers they use, or eventually by the criminals who stole it from them."

If everyone was refusing to provide official IDs to verify their identity and age on social platforms, and just let their account rot there unused instead, we would soon see platforms themselves starting to advocate against these invasive laws to recover their users.
Just saying.
They need you more than you need them.
Stop complying with invasive requests.

Welcome to the age verification era! 🔞 🔍
Here's why you should be concerned
❌ Risks your privacy & security
❌ Threatens anonymity & freedom of speech
❌ It's often ineffective

@Tutanota Does age verification really have to rely on face scans, document uploads, or other invasive methods? 🔍 Isn't there a way to do it that respects user privacy? 🛡️
I have an idea that - while it would need some adjustments - seems reasonable to me, especially when we're talking about such a sensitive topic. In my country, Poland, ID cards have an NFC chip 📲 that contains encrypted data, including the date of birth. Access to this data requires a PIN 🔐 that is set at the government office.
Wouldn't it be possible to create an app that reads this data from the ID when first launched, and then requires the PIN each time to decrypt the date of birth? The app could communicate with the browser locally and simply send a yes or no answer ✅❌ about whether the user meets the required age - without revealing any personal data.
Of course I know not every country has such ID cards, but if they truly care about protecting children 👶, they should first make sure to create proper, secure solutions - ones that respect human rights 🧭 and don't violate citizens' privacy.
That's my opinion - but I'm open to other perspectives if there's something wrong with this approach 💬
