I'm seeing fungus/mycelium-based materials in the news again as potentially green alternatives and it's time to remind people that "mushrooms build large underground networks of mycelium" is wrong. Correct* is "the large underground networks of mycelium occasionally grow some mushrooms". Writing the first is like if we couldn't usually see apple trees and wrote that "apples grow large wooden support structures".

Ces champignons forment des réseaux souterrains qui nourrissent les forêts, stockent le carbone et soutiennent plus de 80 % de la vie végétale. Pourtant, moins de 10 % de leurs points chauds de biodiversité sont protégés.

Il est temps de reconnaître les champignons comme des alliés essentiels pour la conservation et les solutions climatiques.
