A few weeks ago I mentioned juvenile bald eagles fighting for the top of a tree. I finally processed the photos today. One of them was injured (prior to the fight) and bleeding but it still won the fight.
Never give up.
Not great quality photos but the eagles were quite far and the photos are cropped.

Fantastic day in the field scouting for my upcoming photo tours during the herring spawn. Stormy weather, waves crashing on the rocky shore, nobody on the trails, lots of good exercise and great photos.

Long-tailed ducks (Clangula hyemalis) have a wide range of plumage depending on their gender, maturity and time of the year, which requires some time and effort for me to properly identify. I can confidently say that this one is a nonbreeding male in its winter plumage.

It took me some time this morning to correctly identify this bird. I used four different reliable sources but I can now say with confidence that this is a nonbreeding adult Red-necked Grebe (Podiceps grisegena). Currently wintering on the East Coast of Vancouver Island.

They're back and they're loud! Steller sea lions are here to feast on Pacific herring. No spawn reported yet around Vancouver Island but there are massive balls of herring off Salmon Beach, in Barkley sound.

A juvenile bald eagle ready to enjoy the herring spawn on the coast of Vancouver Island. Based on the colour of its feathers and its dark bill, I think that it is in its second year. But feel free to correct me. :)
