A shelf mushroom, about 5 inches high and 4 inches wide is growing on a birch about 4 feet up the trunk. You can see it bursting through the papery bark. The mushroom is unusually shaped looking like a a croissant with its ends pointing downward growing atop a more normally shaped hoof shaped mushroom. The mushroom has intricate bands and thinner stripes of various shades of brown, many of them tan and cream soda colored. On top of the mushroom is a drawing of a woman’s head, complete with flaring fashionable hat.

Thanks @ragman for joining me and the Philly Myco club on today’s foray! Here’s my coolest find: a sexual morph of a cordyceps cicadeae (yes like the genus of fungi for the last of us). It’s my first entomological fungi I’ve found on my own. My friend really loves these jawns and it’s her second time ever seeing this morph, so I was super glad to bestow it upon her 😊

Edit: we’re not sure about the exact species so it’s going to get sequenced and then the dehydrated specimen will be saved in the academy of natural science’s herbarium
