I don’t think I am an anti-progress person. And let us not glorify the mind-numbingly gruelling work a lot of labourers do and have done in the past.
The problem is often not so much the inventions themselves but capitalism’s refusal to deal with the negative aspects of their application.

Calling LLMs AI when they’re not even in the ballpark is one of the greatest marketing “successes” of all time
They’re not intelligent or even close. They’re Paywalled Premium Autocorrect.
But people, including ones who run companies, have been hearing the phrase “AI” in pop culture for over 60 years.
They hear it used for a product, assume it’s what the term has always meant, & proceed as though it’s fucking R. Daneel Olivaw without the annoying terms & conditions.

@Catvalente If the *Kids* are using the term "That's AI" to mean "I call bullshit" (which they are), the meaning of 'AI' is now so poisoned it will be impossible to sell anything with it in about 5 years.
It will be synonymous to the upcoming consumers as add a label that says "This Product Lies, lol".
Unfortunately marketers aren't willing to admit this until the VC gravy train careens into the ravine after the bridge is blown out from under it.

Beavers are really important.
After the huge wildfires in Oregon in 2022, a biologist went out to survey the damage. Not only were the forests blackened, thriving trout populations in the streams were gone, choked to death by ash. “I was in total shock. It just looked like devastation.”
Then he stumbled upon something even more surprising: roughly five acres of pristine greenery in an otherwise burned-out area! At the center were eight active beaver dams.
But this was more than a refuge from the fire. While fish had disappeared upstream of these dams, the downstream water was crystal clear — and trout were thriving as though the fire had never happened! The beaver dams were acting as a water treatment plant.

Optimizing Rust code is really fun. When something is run millions or billions of times, nanoseconds and individual CPU instructions matter. The best way to do this isn't to write assembly -- it's to put yourself in LLVM's place, understand the kinds of optimizations it wants to perform, and understand what is blocking them. A common case I run into is "LLVM wants to represent (a, b) as (a + b, b), but it's part of a struct so the change has to be performed every time the struct is loaded." LLVM can't change the struct, obviously...
Has anybody tried teaching LLVM data structure optimization? Along the lines of: "Here's a struct with a completely undefined layout and representation, and every single function that can access the struct. Based on the uses, try to memoize common computations by adding new fields, and try removing unused fields." Getting there requires locating all uses of the fields of a struct, but this is possible (at least, quite often) in Rust.
