I’m making excellent progress on #sewing a superhero cosplay commission today…
New episode!
EP 179: The Courthouse - Revisited
The epic story of two penetration testers in the Iowa courthouse has a new ending to their story! Listen to this updated version of the episode from 2020.
Conservatives: Let the market decide!
Market: [decides]
Conservatives: NOT LIKE THAT!

You’re not alarmed enough 🚨
@ai6yr JFC
I feel naïve but my first encounter with this kind of helicopter parent/wealth stuff was when I was working in the DIY Lab on my project. I would sometimes bump into a junior high or HS kid whose parents had hired a PhD to "advise" them on their science fair project.
My schools never even had science fairs (that I know of).
The wealth advantage in testing, awards, etc really makes a mockery of the idea of some kind of objective meritocracy.
@meganL @ai6yr I don't want to defend ostentatious wealth, but as ways to indulge one's kids go, providing even stupidly luxurious educational experiences seems fairly wholesome compared with a lot of the things the super-rich do.
I get the equity problem, but preventing the wealthy from using their money to advantage their children seems like a very difficult battle.
University of Florida professor Christopher McCurdy, the leading scientist urging policymakers not to criminalize kratom, has accepted travel reimbursements, donations to his university’s foundation and funding for symposiums from the American Kratom Association.
None of this is mentioned in the papers he publishes.

@TheLongestJohns Nice! Looking forward.
New: Florida and Texas are moving to block or end their use of license plate surveillancereader tech, like Flock, citing privacy concerns and police abuse. The backlash against Flock is growing and increasingly bipartisan.
Bypass for ad-blockers: https://web.archive.org/web/20260901150833/https://techcrunch.com/2026/09/01/florida-and-texas-move-to-block-flock-cameras-over-privacy-concerns/
@zackwhittaker only after they paid out millions to the company for installation costs and are now going to pay a new round of removal costs. Brilliant planning
Onko tällaisilla mielenosoituksilla jotain väliä?
Mun mielestä on.
@hannes Why not join our little community about malleable software:
My opinion is that we need to open source the organization around the software.
Software is an artifact that can be appropriated for one's own benefit, for profit or not, for control and power or not because there are other social reasons for that power to exist.
By creating the organizations "open" to everyone, transparent, easy to understand, easy to copy and alter, we remove those power relations around software.
I wrote a blog post about this, ignore any syntactic errors, just look at the ideas:

@lavaeolus @SoftwareSaved maybe because of this, their new guidelines explicitly say not to refer to it as IRS (or other accronyms) but Inst. of research software at most
@ccamara makes sense, but sad that it's necessary...

@forteller @odapoda Since Signal flatpak is unverified, it's recommended to install it from their repo, as is instructed on the Signal website.
`flatpak install org.signal.Signal` would have worked though. 😉

@consumablejoy #FinishOrFrogAlong hi, I'm in western Canada and I knit almost constantly. I'm mostly here to see what everyone else is working on, but also because I'm losing track of my WIPs and there's at least one I'm probably going to frog.
Finally moving instances, expect disturbances in the space-time-flow
