There's so much evidence now - including from decades of organic farming and biological farming - that groundwater pollution is *not* a necessary precondition of increasing soil fertility. Because Bright concludes his column with this flaming lie, easily stamped out, it's tempting to do that.

*But* that would leave his more important claim, that;

"Removing dairy cows from the plains won't solve the nitrate problem."

... smeared all over our shoes. Because it's dog shit.

I'm not as qualified to debunk Dr John Bright's industry-friendly claims about intense dairying as someone like Dr Mike Joy. Here's a paper he and a group of his co-authors had published on the subject in 2022, in the Australasian Journal of Environmental Management;

"The extensive dairy farming in Canterbury is leading to significant pollution of the region’s groundwater, much of which is used for drinking water."
