Ha, the book I borrowed from the library on sewing alterations & repairs (although good), apparently I have now covered all those skills involved in my various projects. (the focus of that book is on taking clothing that doesn't quite fit you and making very minor modifications by hand sewing to make them fit better, to hem them, loosen hems, fix buttons, etc.). Good beginning book, but looks like I'm beyond those basics now (whee!). Hard earned knowledge from sewing shirts and tailoring a jacket. #books #sewing
Sewing a shirt (using the same pattern, for the third time) after tailoring a jacket, and realize that the Butterick shirt pattern I was using SKIPS explaining a bunch of things. Now that I have gone in-depth on a more difficult project, I see that they infer things they assume you know, but to a newbie (i.e., ME) you'd never know you're skipping something. I suspected as much as I struggled through that shirt the first time through (with lots of help from sewists here). An example is it has no mention of basting in order to adjust the easing of two uneven sleeve pieces, it just says "BASTE". #sewing

Trying to find either a dry oilskin or a waxed cotton in a red tone (I really want a rusty red, but I could settle for a burgundy or a slightly brighter red with no pinky tones to it) and I'm not having a lot of luck. I've found a few places with either black or brown tones, but I wanted something brighter for a winter raincoat. (I know winter is almost over, but it's probably going to take me until next winter to make one.) I tried DIYing it some years ago and it... did not go well (the resulting fabric still smells awful, and it developed a weird brownish bloom on it too).
I'm considering Merchant & Mills in the UK (I like the rust or oxblood dry oilskins) but I'd really rather be buying from somewhere in Australia for the sake of getting it sometime this year. Anyone know of any sellers with more of a colour range? Or any other options that are reasonably breathable?
EDIT: I've caved and looked into ripstop nylon and even Goretex, and I swear everyone only has black, brown, maybe a dark blue if I'm lucky, and sometimes virtually any colour but red. (Including yellow, which I know is rather traditional for raincoats but I don't think I look good in it.) Am I just buying at a really bad time?
I guess I could test the pattern by making up the liner first (haven't really decided on what I'm making that in yet, I want the raincoat to be a bit lighter to account for humidity but not too light; I've had bad experiences sewing with flannelette before and I haven't had any luck finding single-side brushed cottons or similar, and I think shirting cotton is probably too light) and I probably should do some tests of how to sew in Hi-Vis tape so I know how it's going to behave.
I totally wasn't gonna buy any more fabric this year. The one allowed exception was coating fabric, because my current coat is starting to show its age.
And then, of course, Les Coupons de Saint Pierre started to sell this year's coating fabrics.

For my next coat I bought two 3m coupons: wool blend coating at €45 and complimentary colour viscose for lining at a smashing €9 on sale.
Coatings are expensive. Add lining, interfacing, buttons, other notions, and the absurd amount of time it takes to make a coat and it's a pricey goddamn project. So I've been looking for coating fabrics I'd like at a price point I'd like for almost two years.
Yeah, I can be patient.
The coat is gonna be By Hand London Rumana, single breasted and shortened to the knee.

On FehrTrade.com: a Named Saraste Shirt in olive green viscose twill from my stash. It's a Very Wearable Muslin for another shirt I've got planned in some custom-printed fabric... 👀
It's rare that I love a test version even half as much as this one! 😍

Repair/mod task last night to wind down before bed. I had snagged this (free) broken zipper pull duffel bag from a garage sale a couple of weeks ago. Advertising a big bank... had a few leftover scouting patches so used them to cover it up. #sewing#ReduceRepairReuseRecycle
Hey, #fabric, #FiberArts, & #Sewing peeps:
I just bought a couple of cotton shirts, & I have a question about shrinkage. Does cotton shrink •every time• it's washed/dryed? Or is there a point at which it's reached its max shrinkage & stays there?
Also, does it shrink preferentially in both directions (warp & weft)? Or does it shrink uniformly in all directions?
(To be clear, I bought them slightly oversized so they'd have some slop, so some shrinkage is fine.)

My inter-layer stitching is getting much better. It’s not proper kimono-quality yet. But I’m inching my a way towards it. The biggest challenge is the miatsu guchi underarm area. If the outer and inner layers aren’t laying together perfectly, then the garment doesn’t lie straight. #Sewing#Haori#Kimono
